Tucker's Story
Dear Tucker has had lots of adventures in his short life, some we wish he could tell us about. When he was just a couple of years old, there were severe floods in Mississippi where he lived. He somehow survived but his owner was never found and the shelters were loaded with lost, abandoned animals. A shelter here in Michigan agreed to take a large number of animals from the flooding in a transport, Tucker was a part of the group. He was then adopted by a very wonderful woman who promised to always love him and care for him for the rest of his life. Then a very sad thing happened, she came down with a terminal disease that no longer allowed her the strength and energy to care for Tucker and heartbreakingly, she had to find a new safe place for him. He was scared and missing his special person but did adapt to his new foster home in rescue and the other Old English Sheepdogs there. Somewhere, either in Mississippi as he was trying to survive, or in the transport, he experienced an ear injury, probably a bite, that healed and he has a bit of a rough skin and hole in one ear flap.

Tucker is around 85 pounds and is working on losing a few pounds with more exercise. He loves his food and will tend to eat quickly but is not pounding at the bowl. He is neutered, microchipped, and now up to date on all his shots, has had bordetella, was tested for heartworm and given a dental so he now has a bright shiny smile. Tucker was shaved down to help with his care at his previous home. He is growing out his fur to look more like an OES. A very agreeable guy, he listens well to both direction and correction. By no means an alpha, Tucker will look to you or the other dogs for understanding as to what the situation is and what behaviors are expected. Due to the flooding and his owner never being found, his age is an estimate and probably fair to say he is somewhere in the 6 year or so range. His previous owner gave him his birthdate which must have been a special date for her.

Very much a velcro dog, he will follow you around from room to room. Tucker is a snuggle bug and loves to be close to you for afternoon naps and bedtime. He does have his own dog bed, but given the choice, he will jump in bed to snuggle with you. He is very smart and will follow direction when you tell him to lay down, settle down or go into his crate. Rarely will he bark, he tends to observe and let the other dogs take the lead. Walks are a delight for him, and he enjoys going on long ones, even in the snow. Exploring new places is great fun. Meeting new people can make him a bit nervous at first, but he is very friendly once he knows you are OK. He is starting to visit the toybox here and will listen and give only kisses to toys if he is chewing too much on them. A very playful dog, he enjoys being out in the yard running and playing with the other dogs.

Treat motivated, Tucker would be easy to continue with his obedience training. Housebroken, he has never had an accident here. Car rides are a delight and he will settle down and lay on the seat or the dog bed for the entire time, being a great travel companion. He can try and get to the front of the line for attention with the other dogs but will cooperate as attention is being shared by all. It is our understanding that Tucker does like older children but didn't have a lot of experience with them in his previous home. The ideal home for this happy boy would be a home where he is the only dog or maybe just one other dog friend. He likes calm atmospheres so an active, noisy home would not be a good match for him. Tucker is looking for a hero, someone who can spend time and give him lots of attention as he quickly adjusts to being a part of a new family.
