Triton's Story

Introducing Triton, a 9-year-old, 116-pound male Great Pyrenees with a gorgeous gray and white coat, a ridiculously handsome badger face, and the relaxed attitude of a man who has never once checked his email. With a name like Triton, you might expect him to command the seas. He does command a substantial amount of floor space, but his real gift is turning any patch of yard into a private resort. Sunshine? He’ll lie outside and enjoy it. Clouds? He’ll lie outside and enjoy those, too. This man has never let the forecast interfere with a perfectly good nap. His fluff could give a winter coat an inferiority complex. His temperament is so mellow that if you asked him to hurry, he’d probably need a moment to process why you’re bringing that kind of energy into his day. And yes, he knows his name. He hears you. He’s simply a Great Pyrenees, which means answering is optional and getting up requires a compelling business case. If you’re holding a treat, he may be willing to review your proposal. If you’re asking him to move so you can sit down, please submit it in writing and allow three to five naps for a response.

Apply to adopt Triton:
https://www.pyrpawsandfluffytailsrescue.com/adoption-app

Triton is being fostered in Norman, OK. His adopter must personally pick him up there. We do not transport.

Triton is generally good with other dogs, although his social skills are best described as “sweet old man at a puppy birthday party.” He’s happy to coexist, but he can be a little awkward, and not every dog knows what to make of him. If a puppy comes bouncing into his face like a wind-up toy with no off switch, Triton may give a quick snap to say, “Please take that nonsense elsewhere.” He isn’t auditioning for a wrestling team. A dog who respects his space and understands the beauty of doing absolutely nothing together would be much more his speed. As for cats, we have no idea. He has not been around them in his foster home. He might ignore one. He might be curious. He might assume it is a very small, oddly confident dog and wait for someone to explain. We are leaving that chapter unwritten until he has actually met a cat—because the cats would be furious if we put words in their mouths. He also has not been around children in his foster home, so we do not know how he would do with kids. We can confirm he is a sweet, low key, 116-pound dog with a strong commitment to moving when he decides to move. Any introductions would need to be thoughtful, especially with little ones who might assume this enormous pile of fluff is a climbing structure, a pony, or an especially realistic beanbag chair. Triton is none of those things, though he does make an excellent companion for sitting nearby and discussing the weather.

His energy level is a 2 out of 10. The other eight points have been generously donated to younger dogs with questionable hobbies. Triton is a homebody who loves lying outside, enjoying the sunshine or the clouds, and supervising the backyard at a pace best described as “eventually.” He is a fan of naps, followed by a restful period to reflect on how lovely that nap was. He likes being near his people, but he does not need you to organize an activity every 14 minutes to prove you love him. Sometimes just being together is the whole plan, and Triton thinks that is an excellent plan.

A big backyard is high on Triton’s wish list. Every morning, he heads outside and delivers a few barks toward the back fence to let the air, leaves, and anyone else listening know that supervision has begun. Then he lies down to conduct the remainder of his shift horizontally, with the occasional bark when something merits an update. He does not bark at the doorbell. Apparently, answering visitors falls outside his job description. Sun? Lovely. Clouds? Also lovely. Triton enjoys lying outside regardless of which one is overhead. He’s a dedicated nap enthusiast and a definite homebody. His ideal outing begins in his own backyard and ends there too, preferably with a cool floor waiting inside and plenty of water to drink. He needs a yard where he can enjoy his favorite pastime: overseeing the back fence while appearing to do absolutely nothing. It is a specialized field. We would not understand. Walks are conducted on Triton’s terms. He will proceed when he feels like proceeding, and if he decides to pause, pulling on the leash is unlikely to persuade this 116-pound gentleman that your schedule is more important than his current thought. He can get himself into the car, though he does so slightly begrudgingly, like someone who was told the trip would be “quick” and has heard that lie before. He can get into the car on his own, though he does so slightly begrudgingly, like a man who was enjoying his afternoon and has just been informed of an appointment. Adventure seeking is not really his thing. Home is where the cool floor, water bowl, yard, and people are. Why keep leaving a place that has everything?

Triton also knows his name. We know he knows it because he hears it. Whether he responds is a separate decision, made privately and without regard for your timeline. He does not currently know any commands, but he is potty trained, doesn’t chew things he shouldn’t, and hasn’t shown any other mischievous or escape artist behavior. His foster reports no food or resource guarding and no known fears or dramatic overreactions. He is simply a sweet older Pyr moving through life at his own pace, occasionally stopping to see whether the floor is as cool as it looks. Toys do not seem to interest him much, although his foster says there is always a chance one might win him over. Fetch is a definite no. If you throw something, Triton will likely assume you have a personal reason for wanting it over there and respectfully leave it to you to resolve. Whether he likes playing in water is unknown; he is quite certain he likes having plenty of it to drink. Inside, he has shown little interest in the couch. The bed, however, is a different story. Triton is delighted to squeeze himself into a spot, using the word squeeze with the confidence of a 116-pound dog who has never measured the available space. At night, he sleeps on the floor or the bed. When his foster is away, he settles wherever he finds comfortable—floor, bed, or another spot that meets his exacting standards. He has not been kenneled with this foster, so we do not know how he would do in a kennel.

Triton’s ideal home has a cool floor, a big backyard, lots of water, and people who appreciate a sweet older dog moving through life at his own pace. He is low maintenance, likes to be near his humans, and brings the quiet comfort of a very large, very fluffy friend who is perfectly happy to share an ordinary afternoon with you. Give him a place in your home, a yard to supervise, and room on the bed if you are feeling generous. In return, you will get a handsome gentleman whose favorite thing is simply being close to his people. If your life could use 116 pounds of badger-faced beauty, backyard commentary, and deeply committed nap expertise, fill out an adoption application for Triton. We can send it to his foster family, who will help decide whether your home is the right place for this sweet old man to enjoy his well-earned retirement. Triton will review your qualifications as soon as he wakes up.

Apply to adopt Triton:
https://www.pyrpawsandfluffytailsrescue.com/adoption-app

Triton is being fostered in Norman, OK.
