TOAST - LOCAL! (Vancouver Island)'s Story

Hey amigos! My name is Toast (previously 'Sonny' or 'Sami' in Mexico) and I am a LOCAL BOY and here's more about me:

PHYSICAL INFO:

Breed: Terrier mix (best guess!)
Age: approx 2 years 3 months
Gender: Male
Weight: 21lbs (9.5 kg)
Current Location: Vancouver Island

RESCUE STORY - My story is one of quiet resilience. You see, me and my brother were left alone in our home when our 'owner' became ill and was hospitalized. During this scary time, we were completely left to fend on our own until we were finally rescued! Thanks to my angel rescuers, I was able to receive the full medical care I needed. Happily, my brother has already found his new family, but I am continuing to wait patiently for my chance at being chosen!

TEMPERAMENT IN MEXICO - Understandably, I was still a bit fearful and needed some time to trust and come out of my shell. When hoomans approached me too quickly I may have run away or crouched down, This was because I was still learning that hoomans can be kind. Once I felt safe however, my true loving and gentle personality shone! I really loved to play and socialize with other dogs, I was also very affectionate, and my rescuers said I had the cutest habit of jumping really high just to get some attention and some pets (it's my party trick!). I am truly a good-natured, sweet, and loving doggo, who would do well with a patient family willing to give me the time and reassurance I deserve and need to blossom into my bestest self. I would thrive in a calm, loving home that understands that trust is built gently and once earned, I will give you my WHOLE heart - I promise!

TEMPERAMENT IN CANADA - Since being in Canada, I've been a total champ! I've been calm during car rides and am now fully crate trained thanks to my wonderful foster, who is a dog trainer! Though still a little bit nervous, my foster says that I am incredibly curious, and they can already see that I push myself to tackle new things. They say this curiosity is a perfect gateway to big confidence gains! I have just a touch of resource guarding, which is being worked on. I am also very food-motivated which is great for training but it's best if my new adopter continues to work with me on my training around this so I don't try to steal snacks or beg! I am usually sent to my "place" during meal times and cooking and that helps :) And although I'm quite anxious of other dogs still (partially overwhelm from all the changes!), I am getting comfortable and am going on a few community socialization dog walks with a trainer. During the last hike I went on with my foster, I was right out in front and totally into it (while being leashed to my dog buddy Sage!). My foster says that overall I'm pretty darn wonderful, goofy, loveable, playful and sharp as a whip - you can see an example of that as I learn to put my harness on here!

My foster thinks I could do well with an adopter who will be able to provide me with sufficient cardio exercise, particularly in nature as I truly light up in nature. A regular hike, trail run or bike ride would do me wonders. I absolutely adore being out in the forest! I do show interest in chasing the local wildlife however and my foster highly recommends that my adopter continue with my e-collar training around this.

ENERGY LEVEL - Medium. I have a nice, balanced energy level and although I can be a couch-potato I do thrive in the outdoors and would do well with regular hikes/bike rides in nature.

GETS ALONG WITH:

Kids – Unknown
Dogs – I get along with other pups and am currently living with one at my foster's hosue although I may be a bit reserved as you can see here
Cats – Unknown

PREY DRIVE - Yes - Since being in Canada, I've shown interest in chasing wildlife (birds, etc).

TRAINING:

Leash skills – My foster is working with me on my leash skills however I may need some additional patience and training :)
House trained – My foster says I am not fully house trained but they are working with me on this. I may need some additional training and patience.
Crate trained – My foster says I am crate trained now and I enjoy my crate!
Car rides – My foster says I am pretty calm on these but I may need some additional training and patience.

Please Note: WCP highly encourages adopters to do some research and training on their own before their dog arrives.

HEALTH NOTES:

I am neutered and vaccinated.
NOTE: It is not uncommon for rescue dogs to require dental work/cleaning after they are adopted. West Coast Paws does not cover the costs of dental work and/or vet visits. These costs are the financial responsibility of the adopter.

ADOPTION FEE:

My adoption fee is $840.00 CAD including tax (5% GST, 7% PST), which includes my airfare, if a flight volunteer is found directly to Vancouver.

-------------------------------------

DISCLAIMER:

Please visit wcpdogrescue.com to read about West Coast Paws Dog Rescue and it's adoption process.

The info included in each WCP bio is provided to us from the international rescuer. WCP does not have in-person access to overseas dogs and cannot always verify the accuracy of their descriptions, although we ask for video proof of a dog's attributes wherever possible. West Coast Paws Dog Rescue's Adoption Policy
WCP wholeheartedly believes in open communication with our adopters. We are always here to provide support and to join you in celebrating your dogs’ successes! Submit an Application - Start by clicking the “Adopt” button on a WCP dog’s profile. You will be redirected to an application form, which we ask you to fill out in as much detail as possible. Phone Interview - After your application is pre-screened, you will be contacted to arrange a Phone Interview. The purpose of the Phone Interview is to chat about the answers you provided on your application and to ask any clarifying questions. House Check - Once you have passed your Phone Interview, we will ask you to send us some photos of your home. Fear not, we don’t expect your house to look like a showhome! We are simply looking to see where your WCP pup would live and whether or not there are any potential safety hazards (escape areas etc.). Approval - Presuming you pass your House Check, you will receive an Adoption Approval email from our WCP Adoption Team. Deposit - A $100 CAD deposit is required in order for your dog to be reserved for you. Once we have received your deposit, we will update your dogs’ profile to show “Pending Adoption” and will stop accepting any further applications for him/her. At this point, we will notify the Rescuer that a home has been found and request that they start looking for a flight volunteer to bring your pup to Vancouver. Now you patiently wait for your dog to be booked on a flight. The Rescuer will work to find a traveller who is willing to add your dog as ‘extra luggage’ onto their ticket. We refer to these kind humans as “Flight Volunteers”. Meanwhile, your pup will be checked by a veterinarian who will issue a Certificate of Health and ensure your pup's shots are up to date. The vet will then approve the dog for travel and will provide all medical documentation, including your pup’s vaccination record. Flight Confirmation & Final Payment - Once the Rescuer finds a flight for your dog, WCP will send you an email with your pup’s flight information. We will also send you specific instructions regarding airport pickup such as where you need to park, what time you need to be there, and what you need to bring with you. Don’t worry, we will tell you everything you need to know! We require you to sign an Adoption Contract before you pick up your dog. Pickup & Take Your Pup Home - Your pup’s “gotcha” day is finally here! You will pick your dog up at the airport and take him/her home with you. Follow-Up & Post Adoption Support - Your WCP adoption experience doesn’t end the moment you take your dog home. We believe in providing ample post-adoption support and want to be a part of your dog’s journey. Within 7 days of taking your dog home, you can expect a phone call from our Follow-Up Team. If you need any help or support, WCP is here for you and your pup! WCP wholeheartedly believes in open communication with our adopters. We are always here to provide support and to join you in celebrating your dogs’ successes! There is no expiration date on our post-adoption support.
