Toast's Story

Toast is currently living and training with his handlers at Fluvanna Correctional Center.

Through a partnership with the Virginia Department of Corrections, Pixie's Pen Pals (a program of FETCH a Cure) places homeless dogs in the care of incarcerated people for dedicated, individualized training and socialization guided by canine behavior specialists. The bio below was provided by his handlers at Fluvanna Correctional:

My name is Toast and I’m a three-year-old beagle. I’m a very smart boy and already know most of my obedience skills. Just a few more to go!

I’m very sweet and affectionate and have great house manners. My only real issue is, I’m fearful. I’m afraid of strangers, especially men. I’m also afraid of loud noises but since I’ve been with the women at Fluvanna for a couple of weeks, I’m really learning how to be brave. I’ve already worked through some of my fears and am learning to go through doorways on my own. I’ve learned that big noises can happen and I’m going to be okay.

I’ve really loved making friends not only with a bunch of people who love to pet me but also with all the dogs. One of my favorite things to do is play with dogs, no matter what size. They really help me with my confidence too. I also like to play with toys, both with my people and by myself.

I would make a great addition to a home (one that’s relatively calm rather than one that’s chockful of constant visitors coming and going) as long as my new people understand I need a bit of patience and time to learn to trust you.

FETCH a Cure's Adoption Policy
Our staff and trainers review the information contained in the adoption application to ensure that the dogs are placed in homes best suited for their personalities and any special requirements. A home visit is required in order to ensure that your future canine companion is in a home suited for his needs. The application and home visit makes it easier for us to learn more about you so that we can help find the perfect match for your home! Our goal in this process is to ensure happiness and a forever home for our dogs and your family. While we work on approving your application, we will submit your information to the correctional center at which your future dog is housed. An adoption visit at the correctional center is required and pivotal to your ability to help your dog to transition between rescue program and forever home. The correctional center visits are only allowed during business hours on weekdays–our staff will help to plan the visit as far in advance as possible
