Theodore's Story
Are you looking for a fun and playful companion who can keep you entertained for hours? Theodore may be the guy for you! Theo is a handsome, affectionate, and intelligent 1.5-year-old Standard Poodle. He was rescued from a severely overcrowded Las Vegas shelter. We don't know what his life was like before being in the shelter, but we do know he was surrendered and stayed at the shelter for about 6–8 weeks. Despite not having a family, Theodore embodies everything wonderful about the breed: he’s sharp, playful, emotional, and deeply loyal to his people.

Still very much a puppy at heart, Theodore is full of energy and loves to play. Whether he’s romping in the yard, splashing in water, chewing on squeaky toys, chasing after a ball, or wrestling with his foster siblings, his zest for life is contagious. You can truly tell he is a joyful dog as he bounces through life with enthusiasm. When it’s time to relax, he transforms into a giant cuddle bug, snuggling into bed and soaking up affection. He weighs about 60 pounds but thinks he’s a lap dog. He can be a bit clumsy at times as his large size sometimes gets the better of him, but he’s always gentle and eager to connect. He does great with kids who understand dog boundaries and has a naturally submissive temperament. He can be a bit guarded when meeting new people, but once familiar, he loves making new friends.

Theodore is crate trained, housebroken, and uses a dog door. He knows basic commands like “sit” and “wait,” and he’s continuing to refine his manners. Like many intelligent dogs, he can be mischievous getting into the trash or counter surfing if left unsupervised. A mix of mental stimulation and physical activity goes a long way in keeping him focused and content. He thrives in a routine, learns quickly, and wants to please, making him a great candidate for continued obedience or agility training.

One area where Theodore needs continued support is leash reactivity. He tends to bark when out and about, especially around other dogs. While he warms up quickly to new people, meeting dogs in public settings can be more challenging. With patience and slow, structured introductions, he can learn to navigate these situations more confidently. As we don't know his full history with other dogs, we recommend a cautious approach and a home that can provide a calm, structured environment to support his success.

Recently, Theodore experienced an injury to his front leg during play, which required veterinary care, a drain tube, and antibiotics. He’s now fully healed and has returned to his goofy, rascal behavior. He has no ongoing medical concerns and appears very healthy. He’s fully vaccinated, neutered, and microchipped. Like all Standard Poodles, Theodore will require regular grooming something he is already used to and handles well.

There are so many reasons to fall in love with Theodore. He’s the perfect mix of playful and affectionate, with a goofy personality that will make you laugh and a gentle heart that will melt you. He’s the kind of dog who will join you on long walks or hikes, play fetch in the yard, then curl up with you on the couch to unwind. His loyalty runs deep, and once he bonds with you, he’ll always be by your side. He’s incredibly intuitive and emotionally connected to his people, making him not only a companion but a true best friend.

Theodore's ideal home is one that understands the needs of a large, active, and intelligent dog. He’ll thrive in a household that’s committed to continued training, especially around leash behavior and socialization. Whether as a solo pup or alongside compatible canine companions, Theodore is ready to bring joy, laughter, and loyalty to a loving home. If you’re seeking a fun-loving, affectionate, and devoted friend, Theodore might be your perfect match.

Apply today at https://thediscodogclub.org/apply/
