Theo's Story

A060701 Theo; neutered male Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd mix; est. 9 months; 54.80 lbs
Contact: Calaveras County Animal Services
(209)754-6509
Website: https://animal.calaverasgov.us/
Email: animal@calaverascounty.gov

This spectacularly handsome boy is Theo, a member of a large group of Malinois/Shepherd dogs to arrive at the shelter from one location. Kept in kennels and crates for most of their lives, these dogs have lacked appropriate developmental and healthy living experiences. They were a bit undernourished, as well. Although they were initially fearful in the chaotic shelter, they have proven to be quite sweet-tempered and easy to handle, allowing us to coax them into friendship with multiple new humans as they've become more comfortable. Additionally, they all seem to get along great with other dogs.

Theo's stature and stunning good looks turn heads everywhere he goes. At around 55 pounds, he isn't huge, but boy does he have a big presence! Is Hollywood calling? Because we have your leading man, here, ready to make all the ladies swoon.

Affectionate and people-oriented, Theo checks in with his handler often and does pretty well on leash, in spite of apparently having very little training. He hasn't learned a lot of tricks yet but is smart and very treat-motivated.

Like the others in his group, he is not very vocal. However, he is active, alert, and interested in all the goings on around him.

He has been great with other dogs that he's met. At his young age, he is likely to be a lot of fun to train up into a wonderful dog for an active family.

If you would like to add a potential movie star to your pack, Theo might just be your guy. The Malinois breed is famed for intelligence, athleticism, and loyalty. The breed does need appropriate levels of exercise and stimulation to thrive; leaving them cooped up alone for long periods could potentially result in... er, shall we say, your knickknacks being rearranged? But for the right home, our guess is that Theo has the potential to become a wonderful member of an active family.

Theo is neutered and can go home with you right away.

He keeps his inner kennel tidy, which is promising, though we cannot make guarantees on house training.

We do not have information on his attitude toward cats at this time.

As always, a meet-and-greet is required if you have other dogs at home.
