The Amazing ZORRO's Story
Zorro truly is amazing! He is the whole package: beauty and brains. This EXTREMELY sweet, affectionate, playful, goofy guy also knows many commands. He knows the words "crate", "sit", "lay", "beg", "spin", "give me five", "down" (four on the floor), and is currently working on "leave it" and playing dead.
On top of that Zorro gets along great with other dogs, has been good with my cats (though my cats are not runners), and doesn't guard food or toys. He loves tummy rubs and cuddling up with his people on the couch and is very treat motivated!

Zorro's story wasn't always so sweet though. Last year Zorro was dumped at a local shelter. The shelter was very over capacity. They have kennel space for only 40 dogs but were housing over 100. That meant that Zorro was kept in a very small kennel for 4 months inside of a concrete building where the sounds of other dogs barking, 24 hours a day, echoed. The shelter staff said that when he came in to the shelter he was extremely sweet but after enduring the kennel, with no exercise or quiet time, he had started to become aggressive towards anyone that approached his space and because of that he was set to be euthanized. Thankfully, a local rescue stepped in at the very last moment and saved him. They tried their best to work with him and his fear of being caged. They took him out regularly to play and interact with other dogs and people. He was perfect with both but when put back in to a kennel he digressed again. At that point euthanasia was feeling like their only option for him. However, having seen Zorro and how wonderful he was when not kenneled we felt we could help and took him home with us.

The first word Zorro learned was "crate". He is rewarded with treats for going in it and when the crate door is closed. We have had NO problems. He behaves wonderfully in his crate and even better if he is given bones to chew on so he doesn't get bored. He is also taken out and allowed to exercise regularly. He spends hours outside running and playing with the other dogs. He loves to run after tennis balls and has even been known to catch them when they are tossed in his direction. We have an outdoor kennel that he is trained to go in and he has no problems with that kennel but we can not replicate the loud, frantic, hysteria of a shelter in order to work with any issues that he may still have. Because of that we do not know how he would react if boarding was ever necessary for him and as such do not recommend ever doing so because of his history.

If you love this breed then you will love Zorro. We have had him for approximately 4 months now and have not had any issues with him at all. He is sweet and just a fun overall friend to everyone that lives here. He is not without flaws though- Zorro loves to chew plastic. He can shred a plastic toy in very little time and he also has no respect for other animal's space so small dogs or elderly dogs may be shoved by him or stepped on. We also do not recommend children younger than 12 with him because of his kennel history. It is unrelated but I am always cautious about large adult dogs and children.

If you have any additional questions or would like to meet Zorro then please send us an email. We require an application is filled out before any introductions are made but I can answer all of your questions and see if he is a fit for your home before you invest the effort in filling out the app.
