Teddy (MR26-359)'s Story
Meet Teddy!

Teddy is a 1-year-old Chow Chow with a gentle heart and a cautious, sensitive nature. She is still learning that the world can be safe and predictable, and she needs time, patience, and consistency to feel comfortable in new environments (a little bit of chicken or cheese helps!). While very shy at first, she shows small but meaningful signs of trust as she begins to feel secure.

Teddy is currently building confidence in shelter care and will thrive in a calm, structured home that allows her to move at her own pace. She is beginning to show interest in other dogs and may benefit from a calm, well-adjusted canine companion who can provide reassurance while respecting her space.

Teddy has exhibited significant fear-based behaviors in the shelter environment, including extreme avoidance, resistance to handling, and occasional air snapping when overwhelmed. She is considered a high flight risk requiring structured management, secure containment, and careful, low-pressure handling as she adjusts to a new home. A securely fenced yard with a minimum 6-foot fence is required to support her safety as she continues learning about the world.

She is currently receiving behavioral medication to support her progress. Any medication changes must be guided by a veterinarian and should not be adjusted or discontinued without professional oversight.

Teddy will do well with an experienced adopter, ideally one familiar with the Chow Chow breed or similar independent, sensitive breeds, who understands the importance of patience, structure, and allowing trust to develop over time. Due to her sensitive nature, Teddy would do best in an adult-only home without young children.

A meet-and-greet at the shelter is required to ensure the best match.

With calm consistency and respect for her boundaries, Teddy has the potential to continue building confidence and gradually blossom into a more secure companion.
------
Many NMDR dogs have had limited prior socialization and may need time, patience, and support as they adjust to home life. Skills such as house training, leash walking, and handling may require continued practice. Progress will vary by individual dog. Homes with older children are often a good fit, depending on temperament. To learn more about NMDR and our adoption process, please visit our website.
