Teddy's Story

Teddy came into our program as a surrender from a breeding operation – he was being retired, and quickly made the transition to loving little lap dog. He’s a 7.5 yr old male miniature poodle that weighs 13# , and is reddish apricot in color. Teddy has never been an only dog – he was kenneled with multiple other males at the breeding facility, and is now in a foster home with dogs of various sizes, so we think he would do best with another small dog in his home, or have his person home much of the time.
Teddy is social and friendly with new people, and tends to jump up against their legs to get attention. He is quite affectionate, and content to be next to (or in the lap of) people once he gets to know them. The older children that visit the foster home are well received – especially if they have soft treats to give him. We recommend kids be respectful 10 yr and up, and mature enough not to accidentally drop him. Don’t know how he would be with cats, but he loves other dogs. Fortunately, he has a secure fenced yard to play in, because he enjoys running around and doing zoomies with the other canines. Not a big fan of toys– he’s never had them before, and doesn’t seem to have any interest in them now.
The best place to sleep at night is in bed with you (you lift him up – he can jump down), but he can also be crated in the same room, next to your bed. His last choice of sleeping arrangements would be confined in another room. Teddy is housebroken – he needs to go out first thing in the morning, and needs to stay out until he has his BM. He goes out several times a day to do his business, but could probably “hold it” for 6 hours when you need to leave the house. Walks fairly well on leash, at your side or behind you. Has done well riding in the car – either in a crate, or on a blanket on the front passenger seat. Not a big barker, but will alert you if he needs or wants to go outside (high pitched bark). Has good recall from within the secure fenced yard, or from anywhere inside the house. No problem going up/down a few steps, but hasn’t tried to go up/down a full flight.
Teddy has an easy going personality, and does well with grooming…..which he will need 4-5 times/year. He is neutered, and current on distemper and rabies vaccinations. The 4DX test, which includes the heartworm test, is negative. He has a good appetite, and will need to have his dry food soaked until it is soft –some of his teeth are missing because he didn’t have good dental care when he was younger. His tongue does not hang out. If a treat is dry and hard, he will move it to the back of his mouth and chew it with his molars. His microchip is registered to Second Chance. Teddy can be adopted for $350. If you have questions, or would like to meet him, call Second Chance at 651-771-5662.
