Tawny's Story

Meet Tawny, a stunning 4-year-old Cane Corso who arrived to us weighing just 90 pounds — painfully underweight for her breed and frame. She came in with irritated, raw skin and a body condition score of 2/9. She should have been the large, powerful, majestic presence this breed is known for… but instead she was a shadow of herself.

Today, Tawny weighs approximately 120 pounds and continues to gain strength and muscle every week. With consistent meals, structure, and care, she is finally filling out into the impressive, balanced Cane Corso she was always meant to be. Her coat is improving, her eyes are brighter, and her confidence grows daily.

She adores treats, melts for kind voices, and leans her full weight into affection like she has been waiting her whole life for someone to truly see her.

Tawny can be cautious at first meeting. A low grumble is simply her way of saying, “Give me a moment — I’m making sure I’m safe.” Once she understands that she is, she settles quickly and reveals a gentle, deeply loyal, soulful companion. She has done well with the dogs she has met and continues to build positive social experiences.

Tawny is currently being evaluated for a suspected cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) injury in her left rear leg, similar to an ACL injury in people. She is weight-bearing but does show intermittent limping. X-rays revealed joint swelling and early arthritic changes. An orthopedic consultation is recommended to determine the best long-term management plan, and potential adopters should be prepared for possible surgical repair and a structured recovery period if advised. Maintaining a healthy weight and controlled activity will be important for her long-term joint health.

Tawny is spayed, microchipped, fully vaccinated, dewormed, Heartworm tested negative, and on monthly preventatives. She is medically up to date and ready for a committed, knowledgeable home that understands her breed and is prepared to support her continued physical and emotional recovery.

Apply to adopt here:
https://orangecountyva.gov/159/Pet-Adoption-Foster-Care-Information
