TARO's Story

Taro is a soon-to-be 2-year-old purebred Australian Shepherd with devastating good looks, fierce intelligence, and the energy of someone who absolutely has a full Google calendar (its mostly walk, snack, and monitor neighborhood activity). He loves other dogs and would happily spend his days playing with his canine buddies and forming a highly exclusive squad (applications reviewed daily). He also really loves his people... hard. He wants to be your shadow and part of everything you do. He loves car rides and school pickups are his specialty!

Now... cats.

Taro has thoughts about cats. Strong ones. He is deeply committed to his personal research project titled What Is That and Why Is It Looking At Me Like That? and prefers to conduct his investigations up close and at high speed. Taro is currently in foster with a dog savvy cat and does well, but cats who aren't prepared for up close and personal need not apply.

Taro loves walks and treats every outing like an important mission, complete with neighborhood updates and light surveillance. He can be protective if he doesn't feel his handler has things covered, but with a confident, steady person leading the way, he relaxes and happily settles into his role as your own personal adventure buddy.

His ideal home? Lets just say Taro thrives in a calm, confident, women-led household—whether thats a single woman, a mom with kids, or a girls rule the roost situation where he can fully settle into his routine and bond closely with his people. He previously had to protect his mom and human siblings from their dad so its left a lasting impression. He does like men, but it takes some time for him to be sure everyone is safe. Taro is not your typical Aussie. He doesn't prefer farm life and freedom to run. He grew up in a busy city so he prefers to be tethered to his handler which makes him the most confident. When in the yard, he wants to do his business and come back inside. He lets you know by launching himself at the door whether you are standing next to him or not he just wants to be back inside monitoring his cat housemate. Taro is house trained but sometimes had crate accidents. He just gets super excited when his foster mom comes through the door he cant contain his happiness!

Taro is neutered, up to date with vaccines and microchipped. If you've been missing a slightly chaotic, highly opinionated, extremely lovable dog in your life, Taro would like to correct that immediately.

If you would like to meet TARO, or for more information, please email PetRescueOfMercer@gmail.com or put in a non-binding dog adoption application on our website: https://www.petrescueofmercer.org/dogadoptionapp

Applicants must live within 60 min of Hamilton, NJ to be considered. A vet check will be conducted for each application and a solid vet history for current and past pets will be verified.
