Sweet Carrara in Kentucky's Story

Carrara is a sweet and affectionate one year-old West Highland White terrier. Her favorite things include giving her human kisses, sleeping with her human, and having the company of dogs that are on the calm and mature side.

Carrara has an enlarged heart, so she’ll need some special care. She does not tolerate hot temperatures for very long and she is lower energy than a typical one year-old Westie. Because of her condition, she will not be able to take steroids, which can be an issue as Westies often have skin allergies.

Carrara’s forever family should be rigidly committed to a zero treats and people food policy, as allergies can be triggered by food. She is starting to like the idea of toys but doesn't yet understand what qualifies as one. Your towel might be a toy or your shoe or your T-shirt.

She's not a fan of grass and especially wet grass, both of which can make her itchy. Being in the grass too much makes her itchy. She will need a home that doesn't want her outside a lot.

She's pretty good about being housetrained. She never #2s in the house. She has no potty signals yet so occasionally we have a #1 accident. She never potties in her crate. Ever.

Loud or quick things really bother her. Toddlers and boisterous dogs are not going to be her cup of tea. She's safe in a crate but unhappy. However, she has learned if I say No really sternly to quit yapping. Unless I leave the house and then a heck of a lot of barking goes on.

At night she's an armpit sleeper. She likes to curl up in that hollow and snore. She absolutely loves to sleep with people. So far she cannot or will not jump up into things. She uses bed and couch stairs or begs until you pick her up. She howls like some eerie white wolf when she is happy to see you. Or her food bowl-Lol. It's pretty darn cute!

She takes 5 to 7.5 mg of ceterizine (an antihistimine) per day and wild caught salmon oil over dinner. For a Westie she is doing really, really well skin wise. If a skin spot flares Coat Defense (an anti-bacterial, anti-fungal powder) works really well on it.

She is spayed and fully vaccinated. She's being fostered in Hart County, KY.

She's a delightful dog. She loves being with people. She loves my cairn terrier and will not do well as an only dog. She's chatty and terrier stubborn and cute as a button.

She was born in March of 2024 and is now a perfect weight at 14.2 lbs. She is good for the Dremel on her toenails and for a bath. She does okay in the car but it upsets her tummy and she fusses.

So far walking on a leash is not a grand idea on her part, but we are working on it. Right now she will need a terrier proof fence. She does like to dig (as most terriers do).

If you think you might be her person and you are committed to the Westie lifestyle, please reach out to inquire about an application.
