Suzie's Story

Suzie is the most special dog we currently have up for adoption. We would consider her Special Needs because, despite being 1.5 years old, she is unsocialized and inexperienced. Her former owner was herself inexperienced, and she didn't provide Suzie what she needed to develop joy, confidence, trust, and an awareness of expectations. She is thus extremely fearful of new situations and people, but she is also extremely sweet. She has never exhibited any aggression, even when scared and pushed. Her instinct is always to flee and hide. She loves other dogs and enjoys the presence of cats. She is only fearful of people. We don't know what triggered this in her, but we know her owner had plan to have her shot before leaving town, and we were contacted in the last resort to offer a chance for Suzie to live. We are grateful for the trust and overjoyed that she came to us. She is a very special dog and has already shown great potential in her foster home. She has bonded with her foster mom and has tolerated the teenage kids and father with zero incident. She just tries to hide. She has no prior experience on a leash and had practically almost never met anyone other than her owner (a single older lady who lived in the country). Suzie has been learning to drag around a long cable attached to her harness and is occasionally double-leashed for safety. Since coming to us on the 23rd of September, Suzie has made steady progress and enjoys playing with her new friend, a little wire-haired Dachshund cross named Doug.

We are looking for a special home for Suzie, with the following requirements:

1. A securely fenced yard (minimum 4 feet)
2. No children younger than 10 (any minors must be experienced and respectful)
3. An adopter who is willing to be patient and either has the requisite experience or is willing to work with us to learn how to help Suzie with socialization and learning
4. Preferably a home in the Missoula Valley, but we will consider other options if experienced and checking all the necessary boxes
5. At least one other dog in the home.

We encourage you to reach out to us through messenger on our Facebook page or at director@arcrising.org while we set up our phone system and online application, which will be operational soon. Thank you for your patience. We require a full-length application to be completed. We select an adopted for each animal based upon best fit for family and animal given all provided information (not first come, first serve). We require the animal to be sterilized at the time of adoption. We do not require a site visit but reserve the right to do one if red flags arise and we reserve the right to refuse an adoption. We also have a long, thorough adoption contract that must be signed for legal transfer of ownership and adoption fee is collected at that time in the form of payment to ARC Rising. We offer post-adoption support (counseling, referral, etc.). We require that if an adoption does not work out, adopters contact ARC rising and we reserve the right to reclaim the animal or approve transfer to a reputable organization or vetted new home.
