Sumac's Story

Meet Sumac — the kind of puppy who feels like a warm kitchen in the evening, when something good is simmering, and everyone’s a little sleepy and happy. He’s gentle comfort with a dash of spice, the cozy flavor that sneaks up on you and makes everything better. Whatever Sumac is doing, he does it with his whole heart and his whole body.

Sumac is a 6-week-old, 9-pound male Pyr/Lab mix (based on mama Rosemary’s looks), though if you ask us about dad, our answers change daily. Given the size of these pups, we’re assuming he wasn’t just handsome — he was handsome and possibly horse-adjacent. Mom weighs around 72 pounds, so we’re guessing Sumac will land somewhere in the 60–70ish pound range… or we could be wildly wrong. Either way, adopting Sumac means signing up for a long-term commitment to a breed-guessing journey, a weight-prediction journey, and friendly daily bets with your partner about what on earth he’s made of.

Around other dogs, Sumac operates under the firm belief that everyone is here to play. It’s just immediate enthusiasm, full-body participation, and an open invitation to wrestle, chase, and generally exist at maximum puppy joy. If another dog is present, Sumac assumes they’ve cleared their schedule specifically for him This makes him an absolute delight for playful dogs… and probably not the best match for a grumpy old senior who would prefer peace, quiet, and yelling “get off my lawn” from the couch. Sumac has not met a cat yet; given his current life experience, he would likely assume a cat is simply a strangely shaped dog and immediately try to befriend them and engage in play. Once the tiny shark teeth are no longer his primary method of communication, Sumac would be thrilled to have a kid of his very own. Kids are basically a puppy’s ideal roommate — snack-prone, giggle-friendly, and endlessly entertaining. Until then, he’s just doing classic puppy things: learning about the world one gentle nibble at a time and fully believing everyone understands this is a temporary phase. It’s all part of the charm, we promise.

Sumac is a soft, wiggly bundle of love with a side of enthusiasm, the kind of puppy who clearly believes humans were invented solely for cuddling and climbing. He adores people in the most earnest way possible, and has absolutely no hesitation about launching himself from the bed into a lap like it’s the most reasonable life choice anyone has ever made. If he’s not gently gnawing on a slipper or trying to play tug with a sleeve, he’s carefully scaling a human torso to reach neck-level snuggles, because clearly that is where the best hugs live. And whatever Sumac is doing, he’s doing it with his whole body and his whole heart. By the end of the day, Sumac becomes that sleepy toddler who absolutely refuses to wave the white flag. He was the last pup standing, determined to keep running and playing despite his body filing multiple formal complaints. This brave effort ended with him tripping over Parsley and Fennel and promptly shutting down mid-mission like someone unplugged him. We’ve all met that exhausted little soul who is not done having fun, even though their eyes very much are. That’s Sumac — soft-hearted, earnest, and so wholeheartedly committed to living his best life that it’s impossible not to adore him.

Your mission — should you choose to accept it — is to help Sumac grow into the kind of well-mannered, emotionally regulated canine citizen that you can take everywhere with you. Potty training? That’s on you, bestie. Sumac is six weeks old and currently believes the world is his bathroom until proven otherwise. Socialization? Also you. He’s sweet, gentle, and curious, but he still needs to meet people, dogs, weird noises, new textures, and everyday objects that puppies find deeply suspicious for no reason at all. Training? Yep, still your department. Sumac is not secretly studying obedience theory in his downtime. He is a blank notebook with soft ears. Sumac is soft at heart, earnest in spirit, and ready to become something really special — as long as you’re ready to do the shaping.

So if your heart is already doing that thing where it’s quietly rearranging your life around Sumac, congratulations — you’re probably his person. If you’re ready to apply, please fill out an adoption application at https://www.pyrpawsandfluffytailsrescue.com/adoption-app so we can send it over to his foster family — because no, yelling “I WANT HIM” into the void does not count (we checked). Pickup will be in Broken Arrow, OK and just a heads up: Sumac cannot go home until after February 24th, because growing, learning, and being a tiny baby is currently his full-time job. Apply responsibly. Your future couch buddy is waiting. 🧡
