Sugar's Story
Calling rescues and adopters. Please read my story.

My name is Sugar.

I came to the shelter on Christmas Eve, 12 24 2025. No collar. No microchip. No one ever came looking for me. While people were celebrating the holidays, I was trying to figure out how I ended up here.

I’m estimated to be about 4 years old, and I weigh around 60 pounds. I’m a mixed-breed girl. The staff doesn’t have any medical or behavioral history on me, but they’ve learned some things by spending time with me. They believe I’m likely housebroken, and I’ve shown that I’m calm and easy to be around.

I’m a little shy at first and like to take a moment to see what’s going on. Once I’m comfortable, I stay close, lean in for attention, and relax beside you. I’m not loud or demanding. I’m the kind of dog who follows you around and just wants to be nearby.

Today marks 38 days (01-30-2026) that I’ve been here with no interest at all. That’s hard. The shelter is not meant to be a long-term solution for any dog, but I’m still here waiting.

I am not spayed yet. We do not have a resident veterinarian, and intakes do not stop, so geographical adoption restrictions apply. At this time, adopters must live in Stafford County or a neighboring county.

We are asking rescues to please help. Local rescues are pulling from other states and puppies, and foster homes in the county are limited. Dogs like me are being left behind.

If you are patient and looking for a calm companion, I would love the chance to go home with you.

Stafford County Animal Shelter
26 Frosty Lane
Stafford, VA 22554

Hours
Monday through Friday 11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Closed Sundays and holidays

Adoptions conclude 30 minutes before closing.

I’m still here.
