Stella's Story
Stella the 7 year old black and white female Great Dane is hoping to be the star of your show. The name Stella means celestial star and our Stella is a star at many things including using proper potty etiquette, walking on a leash and relaxing in a crate. She gets the gold star for knowing what to do when you say sit, paw, down, crate, leave it and drop it and has had a soft spot inside the house where she is dependable and responsible with your things and leaving everything as you left it. Stella will bark to let you know that the doorbell has rung or that someone is driving up just so you are aware of what's happening and she likes to go on car adventures to see where the road leads. She lived with 2 small dogs in her previous home but she hasn't let us know how she feels about cats or kids. This senior lady had really been suffering with ear infections and skin allergies and her owners made the difficult decision to surrender her because of the expense of her care and a necessary surgery called Total Ear Canal Ablation (TECA). Her ear troubles have really affected her quality of life as she has struggled with treatments and spent a lot of time wearing a cone. She is not a fan of thunderstorms and she isn't interested in sharing her meals with other dogs. She prefers to be fed in her own private spot. This sweet older lady has had the chance to have her surgery and treatments since being rescued by Big Dogs Huge Paws and is now slowly returning to enjoying life. She loves to play with squeaky toys and peanut butter treats. Do you have a starring role for this sweet old gal in the story of your life? If so, put in your adoption application today.

Medical Update: Stella has been diagnosed with Chronic Valve disease (CVD): ACVIM stage B1. Stella's valve disease is very mild at this time and does not require cardiac medications. Rechecking an echocardiogram and blood pressure in 6 months to monitor progression is recommended. ACVIM stage BI is a classification for dogs with structural heart disease but no clinical signs or enlarged heart. It's an early and mild form of chronic degenerative valve disease (CDVD).

What happens in stage B1?

Dogs have a leak in their heart valves allowing blood to flow back into their atria (upper heart chambers)
There is no evidence of cardiac remodeling, such as enlargement of the left atrium or left ventricle
Dogs are asymptomatic
What is the treatment for stage B1?

No medication or dietary supplements are recommended (we will keep Stella on grain inclusive food)
Re-evaluation with echocardiogram and blood pressure measurements every 6-12 months
What is the prognosis for stage B1?

Dogs can remain in stage B1 indefinitely
However, CDVD is a progressive disease that can worsen over time

Golden Rewards Program

All of our adoptable grey muzzled gentle giants who are at least 7 years young are available for adoption for a reduced $350 donation!

Already a Golden Rewards Club member?
