Starling's Story

STARLING IS STILL WAITING. AND WE HONESTLY CANNOT STAND IT.
Every day, we look at this girl sitting in a kennel and think the exact same thing:
This is NOT where Starling belongs.
She is young.
She is brilliant.
She is athletic.
She is affectionate.
She is a high-energy Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd mix with a working-dog brain that is practically begging:
“PLEASE GIVE ME SOMETHING TO DO.”
And instead... she’s spending her days in a kennel.
For a dog like Starling, that’s especially heartbreaking.
This girl was made to MOVE.
She was made to THINK.
She was made to learn commands, solve problems, go on adventures, run, hike, train and look up at her person waiting to hear:
“Okay, Star. What’s next?”
She needs someone who gets excited about having a dog like her.
Someone who looks at all that energy and doesn’t think “too much.”
They think:
“Imagine what we can DO with that.”
Because Starling still has things to learn.
When she’s excited, sometimes all four paws forget they’re supposed to remain on planet Earth.
Her kisses can occasionally arrive with the enthusiasm of a freight train.
She’s young. She’s happy. She LOVES attention.
She isn’t trying to be difficult. She simply hasn’t learned how to contain all that excitement yet.
And she CAN learn.
That’s the part we desperately need someone to see.
Don’t look at Starling and expect the finished product.
Look at her and see the potential.
Exercise her body.
Work that incredible brain.
Teach her manners.
Teach her obedience.
Teach her tricks.
Give her puzzles.
Give her jobs.
Give her consistency.
Give her TIME.
And then watch what happens.
Because we truly believe the person willing to invest in this girl is going to end up with one hell of a dog.
And underneath all that working-dog energy?
Starling is ridiculously loving.
After you’ve had an amazing day together and worked that body and brain, she’s perfectly happy to curl up beside you on the couch and soak up the affection.
She doesn’t just need someone to exercise her.
She wants someone to LOVE.
Someone to bond with.
Someone whose life she gets to be part of.
And that’s why watching her spend another day in a kennel hurts so damn much.
Starling has already been dumped in Rouge Park and returned twice.
She’s had enough uncertainty.
She deserves someone who is going to give her a REAL chance.
Not expect perfection immediately.
Not give up because she needs training.
Someone who understands that an incredibly smart young dog still has to be taught what we expect from her.
Someone who will stick around long enough for Starling to finally understand:
“Oh. THIS is my family. I get to stay.”
Approximately 1–2 years old
Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd mix
HIGH energy and highly intelligent
Potty trained
Up to date on vaccines
Dog friendly with proper introductions
Kids 12+
ABSOLUTELY NO CATS
Fully fenced yard required
Needs an ACTIVE home
Needs physical exercise AND mental stimulation
Should not routinely spend an entire workday crated
Working-breed experience strongly preferred
Haven will handle her remaining vetting/spay
Westland, Michigan
Please.
Someone out there is Starling’s person.
The runner.
The hiker.
The working-breed lover.
The training nerd.
The person who wants their dog involved in their life and gets excited thinking about everything they could accomplish together.
We need you to find her.
Because this incredible girl has WAY too much life, love, intelligence and potential to spend her days watching the world through the door of a kennel.
Starling is ready.
She just needs someone who is ready for HER.
