Squid's Story

Meet Squid – the Sweetest Snuggler Looking for His Forever Home! Squid is an adorable 12# pup who will be turning 2 years old in May 2026 and is ready to find his perfect match! This handsome boy is neutered, healthy, and doing beautifully after recovering from a few fractures in his past — you’d truly never know it now with how happily he trots around and plays. His foster mom always tells him that his scars are cool, and Squid wears his story proudly. He will need a family who understands that he may/will need some activity restrictions.

Squid’s best forever home would have another similar-sized dog to keep him company and people who are home often (work-from-home or retired would be ideal). He loves being close to his humans and is happiest curled up next to you on the couch or tucked under a cozy blanket. He was not crate trained when he came into rescue and while he is not a fan of being crated (unless he has a dog friend nearby he can see), it is necessary while he is unsupervised to keep him safe. He does take anxiety medication when he is crated for short periods when he is not able to be near his foster dog siblings. We hope in time, this will no longer be needed. When he’s not snoozing or cuddling, Squid enjoys chewing on his favorite toys and showing off his playful side. This boy is very playful and energetic! Sometimes he gets a little too active and needs help redirecting his energy in a healthy way.

He’s a gentle soul with a big heart and has so much love to give. He loves sleeping close to his person, overnight, in the human bed. He should be in a home without dogs larger than he is and without young children. He pesters cats so NO cats in the home. Our preference is someone with Italian Greyhound breed experience. His adopter will need to be willing to make safety modifications in the home, as necessary, to decrease chance of injury as most young Italian Greyhounds do not have great safety awareness.

Good Boy Highlights: • Kennels in his special acrylic kennel for short periods of time (provided to adopter)• Walks great on a leash and enjoys walks. • Well potty trained — reliably uses a large potty pad or goes outside. He may have an occasional accident in the crate if nervous. • Very affectionate, velcro dog and very people-oriented. If you’re looking for a loyal, snuggly companion who will make every day feel a little cozier, Squid might just be your perfect match.

Squid is fostering in the Lincoln NE area and will be looking for adoptive homes in the area we serve (NE, IA, SD) We will consider surrounding states as long as it is within a reasonable day drive and we have volunteers nearby. With any questions, PLEASE EMAIL US AT: NEIGRESCUE@GMAIL.COM. If you are in our area and would like to fill out an application to adopt, please visit Midwestigrescue.com and fill out an online application. NOTE: We will only receive your application if you are an Iowa, Nebraska or South Dakota resident. All other applications will automatically go to your state representative. Please EMAIL US TO LET US KNOW YOU SUBMITTED APP SO WE CAN BE SURE IT IS RECEIVED. Adopters will need to visit dog in the foster home and transport home. We do NOT transport dogs for adoption. All members of the household will need to be present at meet and greet including dogs in the home. Our #1 goal is to find the best fit for each dog in our care so we will review all applications.

Nebraska & Iowa Italian Greyhound Rescue (IGRF)'s Adoption Policy
Research, research, research… Most dogs are in our program because someone did not do their research and got the wrong breed. All dogs are not alike…each breed is different and Italian Greyhounds are not small greyhounds. They are very different than their full size “cousins” in activity level and training. Every breed has a price…some dig, some bark. The price of an Italian Greyhound is housetraining. Housetraining an Italian Greyhound is not impossible but if you have lots of white carpet or have a problem with accidents, then this breed is not for you. Fill out our Online Application at: https://midwestigrescue.com/adoption/adoption-application/ A copy of your application will be emailed to you upon form submission. Please keep your application for your records, in case it’s needed for the foster home, other reps who might have a dog for you, it gets lost, etc. Follow up, follow up, follow up… we are all volunteers and are very busy working with foster dogs, adopters, potential adopters and most of us have a “real” job too. You, the person looking for just one dog will need to do the legwork and follow up on your application. We place lots of dogs, but those that get the dogs are those that are qualified and follow up. Once your application is approved, we will conduct a phone interview where we will talk with you about your application and any questions or concerns we have. The next step is an in-home visit where volunteers may bring one or more of their Italian Greyhounds meet with everyone in the adopting family. We use this visit to learn what the family is looking for in a dog, the safety of the home environment, as well as getting to know any other pets the family may have. After the home visit is completed, we will put you in touch with the foster home of the dog we feel is a good match for you and your lifestyle. The foster home has trained and lived with the dog so this conversation will help both the foster home and you determine if a good match was made. If everything works out, you will continue to work with the foster home to determine the time and place for adoption. Once the adoption date has been set, you’ll want to spend the time you have preparing for your new arrival. All our dogs are crate trained before placement except in extenuating circumstances, so chances are you’ll need to purchase a crate, bowls, dog beds, collar, leash, nail clippers, food, treats, kong and other toys. Adoptions can take between 1 – 3 hours depending on how much information the foster home has for you and if you like to talk about dogs as much as we do! Our foster homes have taken special care of your new family member, usually crate training, obedience training and housetraining. The information they have for you at adoption can be very valuable in making sure the transition to your home is smooth for both you and the dog. Follow up, follow up, follow up… please keep us updated on your Italian Greyhound’s progress. We want to know how things are going before there is a problem. Our foster homes and rescue representatives are always available to help you and your adopted Italian Greyhound over come any training problem. We want the match to work out as much as you do, for your sake and the dog.
