Sparky's Story
This ridiculously cute, stumpy-tailed Heeler escaped a euthanasia deadline in Texas after his previous family surrendered him and his sibling for repeatedly escaping their yard. His sibling was adopted. Sparky was left behind.

When his time ran out, we couldn't leave him there.

Sparky spent several weeks in boarding, where he did wonderfully, before making his way to a foster home in Chesapeake. He's now been there for several months, giving us the opportunity to really get to know this funny, loyal, incredibly lovable little dog who is complicated in the most adorably Heeler-ish way.

And one thing is very clear:

**Sparky LOVES his people.**

A volunteer favorite at the shelter, this 5-year-old boy knows how to give his whole heart to the people he trusts. Once he decides you're one of his people, the walls come down. His foster can pick him up, handle his paws, cuddle him, and love all over him. He's also done wonderfully during veterinary visits.

When Sparky feels safe with someone, **sparks fly.** He bonds deeply and becomes incredibly trusting.

But Sparky isn't a dog who wants every stranger immediately reaching down to pet him.

He needs a little time to decide that you're safe. If someone unfamiliar tries to touch him before he's comfortable, he may let them know in typical Heeler fashion with a little nip. His adopter will need to understand canine body language, respect his boundaries, and allow the relationship to develop on Sparky's timeline.

His biggest challenge is leash reactivity, and his reactions appear to come from a place of genuine fear. His foster has been working with him consistently, and there has been noticeable progress. Sparky will need a confident, patient adopter willing to continue helping him work through his leash reactivity and build his confidence.

We don't know what happened before Sparky came to us. We only know that somewhere along the way, the world became a scary place for him.

But there is also a silly, playful side to Sparky that comes out when he feels safe. He loves playing fetch, and **this boy LOVES water.** During his yard time at the shelter, volunteers could almost always find him happily hanging out in the doggie pool.

Sparky would thrive with an experienced adult adopter who understands Heelers and appreciates everything that comes with these smart, loyal, sometimes opinionated little dogs. A securely fenced yard is important so he can exercise, explore, play fetch, splash around, and enjoy being a dog without relying on stressful neighborhood walks.

His previous owners reported that he lived with children and was friendly with other dogs. Because of his current handling sensitivities, however, we feel an adult home would be the best fit. Any potential canine siblings should be introduced slowly during a meet and greet.

Sparky is neutered, vaccinated, and has been treated for heartworm disease.

Sparky isn't going to hand his trust to just anyone — and that's okay.

His person will understand that the first time Sparky chooses to come closer matters. The first time he asks for affection matters. And earning the trust of a dog who once believed he needed to protect himself from the world is something pretty special.

**Sparky doesn't need everyone to love him. He just needs one person willing to give him enough time to love them.**

Apply To Adopt:
https://forms.gle/zCg2CNoX6A1QbTrr7
