Smuckers's Story

Meet Smuckers 🤎

At just three years old, Smuckers is learning how to be a dog for the very first time. This sweet dachshund mix was found as a stray in rural Missouri, unsure of the world and the people in it. After spending time in a shelter, he’s now in a loving foster home where, day by day, he’s discovering what safety, comfort, and companionship truly mean.

Smuckers may be small, but his journey has been big. He’s working so hard to build trust, and it’s beautiful to watch. Every gentle tail wag, every curious sniff, every moment he chooses to come a little closer is a quiet victory. In his foster home, he’s thriving with routine and patience. He’s doing wonderfully with potty training and takes comfort in following the lead of his foster siblings. Other dogs help him feel safe—they show him that the world isn’t so scary after all.

Because of this, Smuckers absolutely needs a confident canine companion in his forever home. Another friendly, stable dog will be his guide, his comfort, and his best friend. He also needs an experienced dog owner—someone who understands that healing takes time and that fear can sometimes come out as fear biting. Smuckers isn’t “difficult”; he’s learning. With patience, structure, and positive reinforcement, he will continue to blossom.

The right home for Smuckers will celebrate the small wins, move at his pace, and see the incredible potential in his gentle soul. In return, you’ll get to witness something truly special: a once-frightened dog discovering joy, safety, and love for the first time.

If you believe in second chances and have a calm home with a canine companion ready to help him grow, Smuckers might just be waiting for you.
