Smokey is a gorgeous 5-year-old German Shepherd Mix weighing approximately 60 pounds, and he is ready for someone to see the sweet, loving boy underneath that handsome exterior.
Smokey has a beautiful black-and-tan coat and a heart that is just as special as his looks. Once he gets comfortable with you, Smokey is a sweet, affectionate, cuddly boy who loves receiving love and giving it right back. He has such a gentle, loving personality with the people he knows and is happiest when he feels safe and secure with his person.
Smokey does need an experienced owner who understands that trust takes time. He does not immediately warm up to strangers, but once he becomes familiar with you, he is friendly and affectionate. He is considered a project dog, but please don't let that label scare you away. With patience, consistency, kindness, and someone willing to let him come out of his shell at his own pace, Smokey has the potential to become an incredible companion.
He has not yet been tested with dogs or cats, so introductions and future household compatibility will need to be handled thoughtfully.
One important thing we want potential adopters to know is that Smokey is heartworm positive. He will receive his first round of heartworm treatment while he is here at the shelter, but his treatment does not end there. His future family will need to continue working with their veterinarian and keeping up with his recommended treatment plan until the heartworms are completely gone.
We know the words “heartworm positive” can sound scary, and we want to reassure potential adopters that a heartworm diagnosis does not mean Smokey cannot go on to live a long, happy, healthy life. With proper veterinary treatment, follow-up care, and keeping him on his recommended heartworm prevention, heartworms can be treated. The important thing is that his treatment is completed and maintained as directed by his veterinarian.
Smokey deserves a family who will see past a medical diagnosis and see the wonderful dog waiting to be loved. He will need someone committed to his care, willing to follow through with his treatment, and ready to give him the patience, love, and forever home he deserves.
Smokey isn't looking for perfection. He is looking for patience. Understanding. A safe place. And someone who will give him the time he needs to trust.
And once that trust is earned? You may just discover the most loving, loyal, cuddly boy you've been looking for.
Smokey is available for adoption at the Lee County Animal Shelter in Bishopville, SC.
He and his brother Koda can be adopted together or separately. They are simply hoping that somewhere out there is a family who will look past their initial hesitation and give them the chance they deserve.
If you're an experienced dog owner looking for a handsome boy to work with, love, and watch blossom, please consider meeting Smokey. Give him the chance to show you just how sweet he can be.
Lee County Animal Shelter — Bishopville, SC
Smokey 5 years German Shepherd Mix 60 lbs
Please share Smokey's post!
