Smokey's Story

Don't let his in-shelter behavior fool you; Smokey is a medium energy goofball who just wants to be loved. If you want a good-looking buddy to be by your side to walk, play, and share affection, he may be your dude. We enjoyed him enough to borrow him twice during our trip!

He's good on car rides and will sneak occasional kisses to everyone while on the road. He pulls on walks because he's ready to explore but using a back clip harness with a short leash makes him much more manageable. As he gets over the initial excitement of being out, he pulls less and less. We also found it helpful to use both a short and long leash together, allowing him to roam when calmer and ensuring we could keep him close when necessary.

Smokey is quite treat motivated, although he also responds well to hearing he's a good boy along with some pats. He did well sitting to wait for people and vehicles to pass by and didn't react negatively to loud noises; he did react to other dogs going by and will need more work with that. He responded well to commands to sit, lay down, leave it, and come (especially when treats were involved). He shouldn't be too difficult to train, although it will require consistency and a kind firmness (as all training does).

Once familiar with the people and some energy is spent, he is super happy to just be loved on, welcoming being petted all over and reciprocating with surprisingly gentle kisses. He liked the whole family, but was especially drawn to my teen son and was extra playful with him. We are sure that once comfortable in his new home with some exercise and lots of positive attention, he'll be a totally happy, chill dude.
