Skye's Story

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION:
Meet Skye — the sky’s the limit for this incredible girl. 💙
This incredible 1.5 year old German Shepherd came to us as a stray in October and, heartbreakingly, was never reclaimed. Despite that, Skye has never stopped loving people with her whole heart. This is a dog that truly lives for connection, affection, and being by your side.
Like many shepherds, Skye is intelligent, loyal, driven, and deeply devoted to her people. She will thrive with an experienced German Shepherd owner and a confident, strong handler who understands the breed and can continue setting her up for success. We are committed to placing her in the home that is the absolute best fit for her needs and goofy personality.
When Skye first arrived, she showed some reactivity toward other dogs. With time, structure, training, and patience, she has made remarkable progress over the past several months. She now enjoys dog playgroups, loves being outdoors, and continues to show us just how capable she is of growth when given guidance and consistency.
To help ensure a successful transition, adopters will be required to complete one session with the trainer at the shelter, followed by one session in the home after adoption. We want Skye — and her future family — set up for long-term success and understanding from day one.
Skye is the kind of dog who will stand beside you through everything — your hiking buddy, your shadow, your protector, your best friend. Her loyalty runs deep, and once you earn her trust, you have it forever.
She has waited long enough for someone to see how special she truly is.
Give Skye a chance, and she just might become your whole world. 🌤️
She is available for visiting 10am-3pm daily no appointment needed at the Riverhead Animal Shelter. We are located at 324 Church lane and are available at 631-765-1811 ext 2 for more information. Come meet Skye!

The North Fork Animal Welfare League's Adoption Policy
SELECTING THE RIGHT COMPANION ANIMAL Love at first sight! This is how our new companions usually get chosen. Thoughtful consideration must also be taken. Some dogs need lots of room to run. If you do not already have a fenced in yard, consider the cost of a suitable fence. If a fence is not possible do you have time for long walks? Long haired animals need a lot of brushing. Do you have time for this? Some may also require professional grooming. Can you pay for this? Younger animals will need training, which will involve substantial investments of both time and money. Please also consider who will be sharing your home with your new companion. A home with elderly people may not be the right fit for a large, high energy dog. A home with very young children may not be the right fit for very young puppies or kittens. Do you have other pets in your home? We test our shelter animals for general compatibility but recommend that if you have existing pets a “meet and greet” be set
