Skittles's Story
File #25-056
Current Foster Location: Kinburn, ON

Hi. Um... hi. I’m Skittles, and this is a lot of attention. But okay. Here we go.

My initial response to most things used to be "that's suspicious", but I'm learning that not everything is! Toys are great. Dogs are even better. Humans are okay (especially if they have treats). Kiddie pools are the best.

Dogs are my jam. I love meeting dogs of all sizes and I try to convince all of them that we should be besties. I chase ankles. I instigate tug-of-war. I yell at them until they play with me. I’m basically the annoying little sister no one asked for, but kinda starts to love anyway. Having a playful dog in my forever home is non-negotiable. I need them to help me feel safe, teach me the ropes, and join me in my favourite game: Drag The Pool Across The Lawn Until the Human Gets the Hint.

Speaking of humans: I'm not ready to be cuddled or pet or smothered with affection. I do enjoy a good game of tug with my humans, and I especially love following my foster parents around in case they've got good treats. I'm starting to play confidence games with them and learn tricks (booping a hand with my nose is my favorite one... I'll do it unprompted all the time in hopes they'll give me treats!) I will tolerate handling if required, but I ask that you keep it to a minimum until I'm comfortable please!

Also, no kids for me, please. See above on "I'm not ready to be cuddled" - kids wouldn't be able to resist my cute face and soft fur, and that would be really scary!

I’m on anxiety meds and will continue to need them in my new house. I need a calm, patient adult or two who understand that trust is earned, not expected.

It took me a while to understand the concept of living in a house, but now I appreciate all the comfy beds and the climate-control. When my foster parents go to work for full days, I happily snooze the day away with my foster brothers. I'm also happy to sleep in my crate, but I'm a good girl who doesn't need to be contained when left at home. Once my foster parents get home at the end of the day, though, I make sure they know that I'm ready to run and play!

I don’t do walks yet. I'm learning to make positive associations with leashes, collars and harnesses, but leash pressure still makes me panic. And I will straight-up bolt if I panic. My ideal castle includes a securely fenced yard with easy access where I can play safely, bark joyfully, and maybe chase a garden snake or two. So yeah, probably no cats in my home either. I doubt I'd be capable of resisting chasing it.

I know I’m not for everyone. But maybe I’m for you. Someone who’s patient. Someone who understands that healing takes time. Someone with another dog who wouldn’t mind sharing their pool.

So if you’ve got a quiet home (dog chaos is welcome though!), a big heart, and a willingness to celebrate small victories (like me taking a treat from your hand without sprinting away), I might be your girl.

Apply to adopt me, and we can live happily ever after.
