Silas's Story

***If you are interested in fostering Silas, please directly email glgrr2003@gmail.com to learn more. ***

Silas is looking for his retirement home and a forever foster! Silas is an 8-year-old blind Golden Retriever who is looking for a very special home to call his own. Unfortunately, through no fault of his own, Silas has had to change homes a few times over the past year or so. Can you imagine how scary that must be for him? Luckily, he’s a resilient boy, and our hope is that he only has to move one more time. Silas is looking for a loving home that can accommodate his special needs and physical challenges, but most importantly, a home where he can finally settle in and stay.

Silas is a bit overweight, and his skin is in poor shape due to allergies. He is currently on medication, getting baths, and working on his diet. He’s a peach for baths but definitely hates veggies. That’s OK, though. I feel the same way!

As mentioned, Silas is completely blind. He was evaluated at a veterinary ophthalmology clinic, where he was found to have post-mature, bilateral cataracts, compounded by detached retinas in both eyes. Unfortunately, restoring his vision is not an option. He does require daily eye drops.

Silas enjoys going for walks and is easy peasy on a leash. His walks are slow-paced so he can enjoy all the sniffs along the way. When we went to the lake, he walked right in for a swim (on a long line, of course!). He’ll happily jump into a vehicle, but getting him back out can be a test of patience due to his fear of getting out.

Silas loves his crate, and the door is always open. It’s his safe space. He can shred a stuffie or a tennis ball in a nanosecond, and he loves to chew on bones, too. And although he can’t see, he’ll still find a way onto your couch!

When I greet Silas, he gives me a big ol’ smile. Yup, he’s one of those Golden smilers! He can be vocal when he’s scared or unsure, but this has become a non-issue as he’s settled in. Silas will need an adjustment period in his new home as he learns the layout and gets used to the new sounds and smells. His new family will need to understand this and be prepared to give him the time, patience, and reassurance he needs to feel safe.

Silas would do best in a home where people are generally around, although he does well in his crate when his owner is away. He just really wants to be with his people! A physically fenced backyard is a must, as he is a wanderer. A home with minimal steps would be best, and a single-story home would be ideal. Older children would be fine, although too much commotion can upset him.

While Silas has some challenges, he also has an incredible capacity to teach us about resilience, joy, and trust. With patience, consistency, and gentle care, he can thrive in a loving home. He is ready to bond deeply with the right family, and he’s worth every moment of patience it take. We know Silas has been through a lot of change, and we desperately want his next move to be his last. He deserves a person or family who will commit to him, give him the stability he needs, and love him for the rest of his life. We aren't looking for a temporary landing spot
while we figure out what's next. We are looking for someone willing to open their heart and home to Silas and give him the security of knowing he finally belongs.

GLGRR is looking for a special retirement foster for Silas. GLGRR will continue to
cover his medical care and medications, and medical decisions will be made
collaboratively with the rescue, his veterinarian and foster. Our first priority is helping Silas feel better and improving the condition of his skin. Once he is feeling better, if his foster would like to formally adopt him, we can explore that option. We are prepared to keep Silas in our retirement foster program for the rest of his life. The important thing is that he has a safe, loving, and stable home where he can settle in and stay. GLGRR will cover the cost of Silas's medications and medical care. His foster will provide his food, crate, and other standard supplies.

Ideally, we are looking for a family in northern or western Michigan, as we have vet clinics we work with in these areas. However, we are open to exploring other areas and finding a vet clinic we can work with. Silas is currently being fostered in Cheboygan, MI.

***If you are interested in fostering Silas, please directly email glgrr2003@gmail.com to learn more. ***

Great Lakes Golden Retriever Rescue's Adoption Policy
We have Goldens in foster homes throughout the State of Michigan; we do not have a facility in Grand Rapids. Once you fill out the pre-application, on our website, you will be sent a detailed form with our entire adoption process and policies. Once you read that and decide if you would like to move forward, you will have to pay a $20 application fee. After those two steps are complete, you will be given a password to our online application. You can then complete the online application and once it is received, it will be assigned to an interviewer. The interviewer will check vet references and contact you within seven business days. Once your application is approved, the interviewer will send you a roster of our available Goldens via e-mail. Your interviewer will be there to answer any questions and aid in any way that they can. Great Lakes does not post all of our available Goldens on this website or Petfinder. We first offer available Goldens to our approved applicants. When you adopt a Golden from Great Lakes, your Golden will have been examined by a veterinarian, spayed or neutered, updated on necessary vaccines and heartworm and fecal checked. Goldens from 2 months to 12 months old have an adoption fee of $700. Goldens aged 1 to 5 years old have an adoption fee of $550. Goldens aged 6 to 9 years of have an adoption fee of $400. Goldens that are aged 10 years and older are $200. When you adopt a Golden from Great Lakes your Golden will have been spayed or neutered, up to date on necessary vaccines, and looked over by a vet. Please note that it is extremely rare that we get puppies under 6 months of age, and we do not have a waiting list.
