Silas's Story

***If you are interested in adopting Silas, please directly email glgrr2003@gmail.com to learn more about his adoption process. Inquiries sent through Petfinder will not be checked.***

Meet Silas! Silas is a distinguished gentleman at around 7½ years old, a solid 75-pound English Cream Golden Retriever. He’s looking for a loving home that can accommodate his special needs, as he has some physical challenges. Silas has been completely blind for several years. He was recently evaluated at a veterinary ophthalmology clinic, where he was found to have post-mature, bilateral cataracts, compounded with detached retinas in both eyes. Unfortunately, restoring his vision is not an option.

Despite this, Silas is an affectionate and easygoing companion when in the right
environment. He thrives in a home that is patient, consistent, and generally low-key. At first, he can be easily overwhelmed by too much sensory input, and when frustrated, he may need quiet time in his crate. Since arriving in foster care, Silas has grown more confident and trusting, learning that his foster will keep him safe. He will need time to acclimate to his new surroundings and start building a relationship with his family. Silas is very quiet, barking only when something is wrong, he’s frustrated, or is “lost” and cannot find his way.

Silas is tolerant of the other dogs and cat in his foster home, but he isn’t interested in play. He prefers to be left alone. He loves human attention. Silas is not a “pack dog” so I imagine he would be very happy to be an only dog. If there are other dogs in the home, we would want to ensure they are also lower energy, not looking for a constant play companion.

Overall, Silas is an easy boy to have around! Silas loves his crate as it’s his safe space where he can fully relax. Outside of his crate, he enjoys lounging on his bed, sitting by his humans, and belly rubs (the more, the better!). If you like to sit on the couch and watch TV, he’d be in heaven if you invited him up and rubbed his belly for hours on end. If you are NOT looking for all that puppy energy and you want a steadfast companion, Silas is your guy!

Like most other goldens, he loves his food and takes the time to savor every bite. He’s happy for any treat that’s offered as long as you place it under his nose. He takes treats gently. Silas likes to chew on bones stuffed with cheese or peanut butter. He especially likes his lickey-mat, and although he likes squeaky toys, he’s prone to losing them.

Silas is completely house-broken and has made only a few mistakes, certainly due to handler error in neglecting to take him out in time and missing his cues. At night, he sleeps in his crate and waits patiently and quietly to be released and taken outside.

Silas has quickly learned to navigate the ground floor of his foster home. He can go upstairs, but coming down is hard for him, since he can’t see where he’s going or how far “down” is. For the same reason, walking Silas on a leash is a no-go at present, though when he has a leash on and stays directly by your side, he is confident enough for short distances, as he feels comfortable and can go at his own pace. He’s a big dog, and he’s strong, but he’s easy to guide, just by voice, when he’s confident in his situation. Silas rides well in the car, even for several hours at a time.

Since he’s been in his foster home, Silas has made great strides in his confidence. For this reason, the foster believes that it’s time for him to find a forever family of his own. During the time he’s been here, Silas has begun to bond strongly and quickly learns voices. He listens for me to call him when he’s in the backyard. He especially loves lying in the sunshine on the patio, but as soon as he hears me, he’s ready to come in. He’s learned to navigate two sets of dog doors and loves the praise he gets when he does it right.

Silas would do best in a home where people are generally around, though he does well in his crate when his owner is gone for up to 8 hours. A physically fenced backyard is a must, since he could unwittingly wander away. A home with minimal steps would be best for Silas. He wants to be with his people, so a single-story home is ideal. Older children would be fine, though too much commotion can upset Silas. Visiting younger children (like grandchildren) would not be an issue, as long as they were supervised and he had access to his crate (safe space).

While Silas has some challenges, he has an incredible capacity to teach resilience, joy, and trust. With patience, consistency, and gentle care, he will thrive in a loving forever home. Silas is ready to bond deeply with the right family and he’s worth every moment of patience it takes.

Silas is being fostered in Portage, MI. Any adopter must reside in Michigan, Northern Indiana, or Northern Illinois. Silas has a $400 adoption fee. He is neutered, up-to-date on all vaccinations, has had a fecal test, has been microchipped and looked over by a vet.

***If you are interested in adopting Silas, please directly email glgrr2003@gmail.com to learn more about his adoption process. You can then complete the online application and once it is received, it will be assigned to an interviewer. The interviewer will check vet references and contact you within seven business days.
