Meet Scraps
Hi, my name is Scraps! I am an older boy, approximately 9-10 years old, but I'm a Jack Russell so my age hasn't slowed me down! I came all the way from an overcrowded shelter in Modesto, CA looking for my forever home.
I'm a spunky, incredibly friendly, and playful little boy. I am always happy to greet people, but I do want to chase cats and argue with other dogs (I need to be the only pet in my new home). I love playing with toys and going on walks.
I am a special dog. When I was found as a stray in Modesto, animal control officers noted I was chasing my tail. I continued my tail chasing for a month in the shelter there, and began injuring it in that shelter before flying to HSJC. When I reached the airport to fly, the volunteer transporting me noticed my tail was severely injured - the tip had been de-gloved!
HSJC has tried lots of different things for me. Obviously I started wearing a cone so I couldn't further injure myself. I had bloodwork done and was seen by the vet multiple times. We tried pain control, and finally I was put on a generic doggie Prozac called Fluoxetine. This may help me a little, but I still aggressively chase my tail sometimes - so I still wear a cone. Staff believes my behavior is a compulsion - doggie OCD. They recommend researching dog ocd or canine compulsive disorder. http://www.akcchf.org/canine-health/your-dogs-health/canine-compulsive-behavior.html
I was working on housebreaking when I first arrived at HSJC, but after getting neutered and settling in, I'm no longer having potty accidents!
I am up to date on my rabies and DAPP vaccines, micro-chipped and tested negative for heartworm (the vet says I should stay on prescription preventative medication for 6 months). I recently had a dental cleaning and a couple of bad teeth were pulled too.
My adoption fee is negotiable to the right home. Staff takes applications for all the dogs here to find us homes that suit our individual needs. If you're interested in me, please submit one here: https://www.hsjcwa.org/adoptapet
Thank you!
