Scout (Cross-Post)'s Story
Meet Scout! (Cross-Post with Hearts and Tails Animal Alliance, Weare, NH)

A 'practically perfect in every way' 4 year old Pug/Chihuahua mix, only 8 pounds, with the most velvety coat.

Read this and check out Scout's photos and videos through out link. Then fill out an application with Hearts and Tails, another dedicated, all volunteer shelter.
https://www.heartsandtails.org/adoption-app/

>>Scout's photo/video album: https://photos.app.goo.gl/2tKKtFUWqDFbK1hW7

This sweet boy started out in South Carolina, found in a hoarding situation. A kind woman helped him get to a local shelter. Unfortunately, she soon learned there was abuse and neglect at that shelter and rescued Scout, again, along with others. Not all of the dogs were as lucky as Scout, and he eventually made it to Hearts and Tails here in NH.

Upon arrival in NH, we discovered that Scout would need a knee surgery to repair a luxating patella that he had lived with his entire life. He had the surgery on 9/22/25, and has recovered very nicely. His cast is off, he's mending beautifully, and he doesn't remember a bad thing in his life. We're happy to say that he's now ready to begin the search for his forever family!

GENERAL BEHAVIOR:
-Scout is friendly to all he meets.
-Fearless, going up to everyone, and dogs of all sizes out at public dog events.
-Very snuggly.

Scout displays all energy levels. He will:
-Sleep for hours glued to your side or on your lap.
-Explore the yard slowly, or have zoomies and play chase.
-Twirl while playing, while waiting for food, before peeing, and before #2.
-Shake toys and chew chewsticks in the house.
He is self motivated but often looks to see if others will join him. Pleeeaze.

Scout includes himself in whatever his foster's senior dogs are doing. Pushes his way in. He crawls into bed with them, like it or not. They all bark, crowded together, at strangers at the door, watching a bunny through the window, or just the sound of the ice maker. So, Scout might not be right for apartment living.

Scout wants to be the 'most noticed' and will push his way in front of the others to be closest to the treat or petting, oblivious of his rudeness.
Scout has a low growl that doesn't go anywhere, as when another dog comes into the picture and Scout's on his person's lap...or when he thinks he's the only one getting a treat and another dog walks in the room... A quick "eh,eh" correction fixes that.

LIKES:
So many likes.
-A yard to play and run in.
-Playing with, shaking, crinkly flat un-stuffed toys.
-Chew toys
-Meal time.
-Snuggling on the couch with his person or dog friend.
-Being noticed.
-Being petted.
-Sleeping under the covers on the bed next to his person. (He goes way down under the covers...can he breathe?) He will easily take Plan B: sleeping in a small bed or blanket next to his person's pillow. Cover with him with a small piece of blanket, and he's happy.

DISLIKES:
-Doesn't like the yard when the grass is wet. Freezes in place if there's no place else to go. He's OK with doing his business on mulch or brick patio. (Winter snow will be interesting)
-Not being included, but he deals with it.

TRAINING:
-Only working on "Come" at this time.
-Scout is sort-of crate trained. He is quiet initially. Has a low growly bark later, then a nervous, "Where are you, Lady?" bark. He hasn't been crated overnight at his foster home, but he was fine in his kennel overnight when he was at the shelter. His foster mom says he's too snuggly to lock away, so we are looking for a family that will think so, too.
-Scout learns just watching his foster's pups and following their lead. Having a trained sibling will make training him so much easier. He's smart.

- Scout travels beautifully in a pet carry bag in the car. Put the bag where Scout can see out. Not a peep. Same if you put it in a shopping cart and open the top...quiet and he doesn't try to get out.

MEDICAL:
Neutered.
Up to date on all required vaccines and preventatives. (Currently, Simparica Trio)
Knee: luxated patella, operation 09/22/25, successful! Scout didn't really play until his cast came off after 4 weeks. Look at his videos, now!

OTHER ANIMALS:
Good with many different dogs so far. Untested with cats or other..

CHILDREN:
Good with dog savvy kids. Little toddler kids might not understand his quick moves, the possible touch of his teeth when he kisses, or meaningless low growl. And he will likely steal their food if they put it down.

HOME:
House trained.
Not perfectly crate trained but hoping you won't be using it much anyway.
Scout likes to check in, and to be underfoot. He now wears a cat collar with bell.

GROOMING:
-Scout's a short haired dog, easy grooming.
-Doesn't mind his nails getting clipped.
-Hasn't been happy with teeth-brushing.

OVERALL:
Scout is the whole package. He wants to be with you, near you, with other pets, and wants a family. A family who will be around, love him, and not forget him. He will give love in return and give you many reasons to smile and laugh every day.
We want to help Scout find a best fit home with at least one canine friend to play with. To chase with, explore with, nap with, and repeat. Exercise is important and he will need someone who likes to walk with him. At least one family member who's home more than they're gone. Do you work from home? He'd be a great buddy for a family with a live-in Grandma, Grandpa situation.

Are we looking for you?
