Schnitzel's Story

"Schnitzel" is available for adoption again and looking for an experienced home. Please read full post to see if you could provide Schnitzel with the boundaries he needs to succeed in a home.

Schnitzel has a big personality in a small body and has likely learned through a lifetime of repetitions that he can get his own way by whatever means necessary, including snarling, growling or snapping at whatever he does not like.

Schnitzel has interacted with cats at the shelter with no concerns, no chasing or growling/aggression but he was adopted into a home with a cat and was returned due to possessiveness over his owner, food bowls, water bowls and bed. He did not harm the cat in the home.

Schnitzel was living in the shelter office free-range with another elderly small dog and would show similar behaviour if she was in a bed that he wanted, he never bit or attacked the other dog but would bark/snarl at her if he wanted her to leave an area that he deemed "his". 90% of the time they interacted and shared space peacefully.

Schnitzel was adopted a second time into a home with no other animals and was returned to the shelter after a few days. He was permitted to sit on the couch with the adopter while they were eating, when he tried to get closer to their food and the adopter pushed him away, he attacked their hand causing a few puncture wounds.

Schnitzel is friendly when meeting new people and does not mind being picked up by shelter staff to go into cars. He has only shown aggression in situations where he believes he needs to "guard" something that he has deemed "his". We are hopeful to give him another opportunity to live out his remaining years with a home that understand that he needs solid boundaries in place so that he is not permitted to continue this guarding behaviour.

These boundaries include:

All meals to be fed in his crate, he goes in happily once food is placed into the crate (if there is no food involved he will try to bite if he's forcefully put into the crate).

A leash kept on him to be able to safely remove him from areas that he is not permitted to be (on the couch, in a bed, on someone's lap etc if he gets possessive over these locations, this is not forever but until he creates a good bond with his new owner).

He needs to be muzzled during veterinary examinations, nail trims etc.

Schntizel is deaf and has recently had an extensive dental that removed many of his teeth, he makes a lot of noise in his crate only if he can see someone nearby, he sleeps peacefully in his crate when he cannot see a person in the same room.

Schnitzel is up to date on vaccinations, neutered, dewormed and flea treated. Adoption fee can be waived for a home willing to let him live out his golden years with them but donations to our medical care and spay/neuter fund are always appreciated, https://forms.uxbridge.ca/Donation-Form
