Sarge's Story

Meet Sarge — a happy, affectionate boy with the softest ears and the most soulful, expressive eyes. Sarge walks well on a leash. He knows how to sit and give paw. He is very playful and he responds well to treats for training and rides great in the car (just needs a boost to get in). We do not know what he thinks of cats.

Despite facing some tough breaks, Sarge still has a loving heart and a joyful spirit, and he’s ready for the chance to be someone’s forever companion. Poor Sarge has been adopted and returned twice, through no fault of his own.

? First Return: Sarge lived peacefully for two years with a family that included four tween-to-teen boys. One day, while a child was playing basketball, Sarge grabbed the child’s hand. The hand was bruised but not broken or punctured — it’s very likely he mistook the hand for the ball. This was an isolated incident; there had never been any previous issues or concerns with Sarge during his time with that family.

? Second Return: In his next adoptive home, Sarge was resting when a house guest he had never met leaned over and touched him, waking him from sleep. Startled, Sarge bit the guest. He was later professionally evaluated by a trainer who emphasized the importance of giving dogs space while they’re sleeping — especially when they're still adjusting to a new environment. The trainer felt Sarge behaved in a way many dogs might when startled and stressed, and reaffirmed that he is a good dog who simply needs thoughtful, respectful handling.

To set Sarge up for success, we’re looking for a calm, adult-only home or one with older teens who can respect boundaries. He will thrive with someone who understands dog body language, gives him time to adjust, and follows best practices like not disturbing a sleeping dog. Sarge is not a “problem dog” — he’s a normal dog who’s been put in a few tough situations. What he needs now is a person or family who will advocate for him, respect his space, and love him for the amazing companion he is. Sarge is about 4-5 years old and 66 pounds. Please help Sarge find the loving home he deserves.

Please understand that we are an animal shelter and thus unable to say whether the dogs are housebroken as they are not in homes. If they have been housebroken in the past, they will need time to acclimate to a new home routine from the shelter.

If you are interested in adopting, we encourage you to please submit an application on our website today so that we can try and process and pre-approve any potential adopters prior to our next adoption event.

PLEASE USE THIS LINK TO SUBMIT AN ADOPTION APPLICATION. One Step Closer Animal Rescue (O.S.C.A.R.)'s Adoption Policy
Our dogs and cats are not first come/first serve. We place pets with the home that is the best fit for them. Not all animals are good in all homes, whether it’s their personalities, nature, or breed. We base our decision on what’s best for the dog or cat and the family. Thank you for understanding! Our Shelter is now operating. However, please note that the shelter is NOT open to the public and is by appointment only and only for persons with approved applications on file. Some may ask, "Why isn't the shelter open for walk through visits? Why do I have to make an appointment to see the animals?" At O.S.C.A.R., one of our highest priorities is the health and well-being of the animals in our care. Unlike city shelters or pounds, whose residents are in place for a short time, as a no-kill shelter, our pets can be with us for a longer period of time. The shelter is the only safe place and home they know. When strangers, even well-meaning ones looking to adopt, walk through the shelter, it stresses our animals. We make appointments for potential adopters to meet our dogs either in our Bark Yard or one of our meeting rooms. We'll spend as much time as you need and introduce you to as many animals as you'd like to meet in order to make the best match and help you find the perfect new family member! Adoption Process 1.
