Sarah's Story
ADOPTED! Update 12/19: New photo! Sarah (she is the Pem at the top in the first photo) had a day at the spa with her bubble bath buddy Galen so she would be all gussied up for her 'doption day! Sarah has found a special family ready to make her their very own. Her new daddy is coming to collect her in just 2 days time and bring her home before Christmas! Special thanks to the many Corgi angels who have been there for Sarah and helped us care for her and keep her safe until her forever family found her.

It is so very hard to convey in mere words just how very special Sarah is. Her serene and gentle spirit is indomitable in spite of whatever unknown hardships she may have endured before coming into rescue. Sarah enjoys her every moment of every day and is truly a " ray of sunshine" for those who have come to know her. She has deeply and forever touched the hearts of those who love this dear one.

*******************************************************

Sadly, we have had no adoption inquiries for Sarah. She may end up being permanently fostered in our program for lack of an adoptive family willing to bring her home. Sarah's ongoing needs include: premium food ($29 monthly), daily glucosamine/chondroitin supplements for joint health & mobility, twice a month Adequan injections to manage her arthritis, monthly heart worm & flea preventative and dental care (total of $74 monthly for medical care). Sarah needs sponsors to help us defray her maintenance expenses of $102/month while we provide a permanent foster home for Sarah to enjoy her every day. Won't you consider sponsoring Sarah?

*******************************************************
Sarah was seen at Veterinary Specialty Services in St. Louis on October 26th by one of their orthopedic veterinarians to further evaluate her and better assess her future needs. Sarah is in no pain with her current condition and appears to be stable. No more can be done at this time to improve her quality of life as she is not a a candidate for surgical intervention, and she has excellent quality of life, is happy, and content! Her future is bright indeed! At some point she may need medications to manage pain if it would develop for her. She may need future assistance with mobility but for now she does well with getting around the house on her own and with some assistance to go outside for potty breaks and in keeping her uncooperative left hind leg under her when exercising. Indoors or outside, Sarah's favorite way to get around brings to mind a seal pup maneuvering about - in a sort of relaxed sitting position, using her front legs and right hind leg to do the motoring while her left leg slides along neatly tucked under her. She is quite agile & can move quickly in this manner - especially if its mealtime once again or she needs to "help" her foster dad! Her vet was very impressed with how well she gets around and how cheerful & happy she is!

*** Note - Sarah is being fostered in southeastern Missiouri near Cape Girardeau. It may be possible to arrange transport or assist in tranporting Sarah to her new adoptive home. We wondered how Sarah would do adjusting to a new home but we have no reservations whatsoever after seeing how easily she acclimated to her temporary foster home while in St. Louis for her appointment with her orthopedic specialist. Sarah is definitely a "go with the flow" gal and could adjust beautifully into an adoptive home. ***

Sarah was abandoned by her former owners - they dumped her on an acquaintance who couldn't keep her and who kindly took her to a shelter. Due to her senior status and unknown needs she would have been euthanized without a chance of making it to the adoption floor - the shelter was overflowing with younger and more adoptable animals to consider first. We are grateful to the shelter for contacting us and arranging for her to come into our rescue program.

Sarah is a red and white purebred Pembroke Welsh Corgi that weighs 28 pounds and who is estimated to be 11 years young. Sarah adores her foster daddy and waits for him at the door when he leaves. When he is home she is his constant shadow, and "helps" him around the house and in the workshop.

Sarah has been introduced to the assorted adult dogs in her foster home and gets along fine with everyone. She enjoys people of all ages - young and old - and would do well with older considerate children who wouldn't overwhelm her sweet and gentle spirit. Sarah is fully housetrained and crate trained and will go to the door to let you know when she wants to go outside. Her legs are bit wobbly but she is determined to explore and gets her legs to cooperate with her wishes!

Sarah has had multiple visits to our vet to address her known needs. and a dental to polish her teeth until they sparkle. She also had blood work done with normal results. She has been vaccinated, tested heart worm negative & is on preventative, had flea preventative applied, and has been spayed. Sarah's eyes are clear and bright, she follows movement well, and her eye exam confirms that she sees just fine. She does appear to have little to no hearing but has compensated beautifully with her other senses and enjoys her every day just like any other Corgi. Deaf dogs do very well in a loving home environment. They can easily be taught hand signals and learn the household routine in no time.

X-ray films were taken of Sarah's back/spine/hips/knees and show significant arthritis that will need to be managed on an on-going basis. She is on inexpensive daily supplements that support joint health and mobility, and anti-inflammatory/pain medication to help keep her comfortable and provide relief from stiff joints. She does well on carpeted floors or on flooring with scattered throw rugs with rubber backing for traction where she can get better footing. She sometimes needs help getting up from a lying down position but then is good to go.

Sarah would do well where she can be on one level in her home or with just a step or two to maneuver with help. Going up and down stairs isn't very do-able for her. A ramp could make the process easier and would be a simple solution. At some point she may need to graduate to a wheel chair device for additional support. Canine carts can provide the support and mobility that allows a dog to continue to enjoy their every day with their family. Many Corgis - and other breeds/species - use canine carts to address a variety of conditions and do very well.
Go to http://www.CorgiAid.org and read about their canine cart loaner program and see Corgis living full lives with their carts. The cart that we had on hand was not a good fit for Sarah and that cart was donated to Corgi Aid Inc. to benefit another Corgi in need. Sarah may be a candidate for a cart from their loaner program that would be a better fit for her body type and future needs.

Sarah will benefit from gentle, low impact exercise to help keep her mobile and active. Brief walks or backyard outings for some fresh air and sunshine.

Adoption donation $100. This amount will not begin to touch on the costs of her medical needs but what we want most for Sarah is a family to call her own.

If you are interested in adoption, please fill out an Application prior to contacting us. Our adoption information page has detailed information on the adoption process, and should answer most of your questions.

Special thanks for the following sponsors:

Corgi Aid for helping with the costs of Sarah's initial medical care & treatments.

Kristine B. whose family recently adopted a 13 year old Corgi and knows firsthand the joy of sharing their lives with a senior Corgi. Kristine B. & family sent another donation to help with the expenses of Sarah's everday care. Thanks Kristine!

Shirley H. & Dora for their care and concern and for contributing to Sarah's medical fund.

Our heartfelt thanks to James and Deborah R. for sponsoring Sarah and covering all her expenses for the month of December!

Rescued Corgis Bobby & Nora and their mom Nancy M. for their contribution to Sarah's medical fund to help cover past due expenses.

Would you like to be a sponsor?
