Sandy's Story
Sandy is a mixed boxer shepherd beige or tan in color with black mask his ears might stand erect, he is young and active and playful and good with kids and other dogs playful and likes toys. Has been fixed, has microchip and all shots, he weighs23 lbs at 4 months so will be med large. he should have some obedience training you can get this at Petsbarn or other places or use a book by Cesar Milan or CD he should know to walk on a leash beside you without dragging you down the street, he should come when you call his name and ultimately the owner of a large dog is responsible for the actions of the dog so whatever you put into obedience will pay off later. If your dog darts past you when you chat with the Ups guy you can call him back before he upsets Grandma who is using her walker to exercise walking down the side walk. A really sweet dog, cost of dog is $125,00 cash or card no checks ready to go the moment you fall in love with him. Watch fit of collar as puppy will grow.Notice: at our agency all dogs go out spayed or neutered, tested for heartworm or ehrlicia if a dog falls into the appropriate age group, has been given kennel cough shot, is wormed for most common worms, has received a rabies shot if old enough which is 4 months which is good for a year or 3 years if over a year, has been given 1 parvo, distemper shot if over a year old or 3 if under a year old or will be provided for by us at kennel, to give more of these bosters encourages cancer. They have been given a cursory examination by a DVM who looks at teeth, hair, eyes, body and ears. When a person adopts from us they are getting over $200 in veterinary services for the price of the dog which ranges from $100 to $125 . When adopting here, people who find their pet take it with them at that time and receive a leash, collar and ID tag and all pets are microchipped although chip needs to be registered locally and nationally if you want. Locally it is $10 currently which is good for one year. Dog has been healthy here and has not been on any medications. We urge people to get an RX for heart worm prevention from their own vet and since we will have tested the dog within the past 3 months this is current enough a veterinarian should not want to do the test again if they insist on this find another vet. Heart worm is caused by the bite of an infected mosquito and the worm is thrust through the skin and into the body slowly making way to pulmanory area entering the heart where it grows into an adult worm 7 inches long resembling limp spaghetti. It then reproduces to form small worms which are picked up by uninfected mosquitos and the cycle repeats. Normally dogs which are under a year old are too young to have symptoms of heart worm due to a time cycle. We test all dogs over a year old unless they come to us already on heart worm prevention. It is so simple to protect your dog and we encourage you to use Heart Guard Plus, be sure your product carries the word plus to take care of both heart worms and intestinal worms. Intestinal worms are picked up by dogs through contamination or through pads on feet and carried to the intestines. There is nothing so cunning as a parasite. With puppies we find almost all puppies are born with worms because the worm has been transmitted to the mother dog one way or another and hides out as a cyst. When the mother is ready to deliver the cyst senses there is action in the milk bar and move there ready to transmit to the puppies as they nurse. Because worms are everywhere and we live so close to our pets, sharing cars, beds, houses with them, we want our family safe and they will be kep safe if they worm their pets monthly with Heart Guard Plus or another good product. Dogs can pick up worms walking through a bark park, in a veterinary waiting room and a trip to the back yard through transiting animals such as birds, cats, racoons, foxes, bats etc. Bats also can cause rabies so your pet must be kept vaccinated. With Ehrlicia it is caused by a tick. Here it is not the one that causes Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever or Lymes Disease, these ticks just carry ehrlicia which humans do not get and both Ehrlicia and heart worms were brought to America during Viet Nam war by our returning guard dogs. Both heart worm infestation and ehrlicia manifest by a dog being listless, with heart worm an occasional cough, a poor coat condition and pale gums as blood is taken from them on both accounts. Once a dog has heart worm it is expensive to treat but to discard the pet is heartless without trying to save its life due to your negligence. With Ehrlicia and heart worm the pet usually loses weight, does not thrive or play and is listless. Ehrlicia can be treated but will always test positive when testing so a test is useless but the dog can live a long and happy life and we have adopted them in the past with full disclosure of their health and all are still alive and healthy. Dogs that are sick usually lose weight as a first indication. This is one reason a trip to a good vet is needed yearly. With our agency we rank dogs on house breaking on scale of 1-10 with 10 the highest but lesser ratings do not make a dog a poor learner or bad pet it means you will need to step up and work with the dog and use some tips to train the dog. We suggest buying a fold down crate from Walmart and it is humane to cage dog for periods of 3 hours at a time and over night. When out of cage on bare floor watch dog for signs of losing interest in a toy, suddenly circling, sniffing floor or base board and take outside right then .Never yell at dog for mistakes of Mother Nature and always praise for good jobs well done. To a dog bathroom habits are natural and his mom praised him. Dogs taken away from mom too soon have a harder time learning to be house broken in a human house. Never say your dog's name in anger if you do then don't wonder why it does not eagerly come when called. You should cage your dog with an interesting toy like a Kong. The cage should be a safe place never used for punishment. If you come across a mess clean it up and forget about it and start over the dog will not recall what he or she did an hour ago. Most dogs can be house broken within 3 weeks. When you accompany yur dog to the back yard on a poop session, note anything mysterious in the stool such as blood, moving worms, raw hide etc. Blood in stool is not acceptable but can be from so many different sources that a dog eating and playing likely has a parasite easily cured, IBS with mucos or something else, in elderly dogs it can be a tumor and a puppy it can be parvo. If dogs play it probably isn't fatal and you can wait to call the vet or to take in. Pet food with red dye often appears to be blood. It is scarey. Spayed dogs should not have a show of blood ever. If a dog has this it might have gotten out of the agency unfixed or they may have trusted word of donor who signed the dog was spayed. When you adopt a pet from us we hope it is forever but we promise to make every effort to take it back if it doesn't work out or you have to move. Be sure to keep your paper work and call us. If you have a family member willing to take your dog notify us so we change the microchip owner and this number will follow you as long as pet lives and after. If you are having peoblems training your pet remember a pet is as smart as the owner and no dogs are born trained. We suggest you buy DVDs by Cesar Milan and watch his show on National Geographic on Friday nights he is a wonderful trainer if just a few people followed his advice we'd have thousands of fewer euthanasias. If you need extra tips try our website www.pgawaep.org and other sites. We feed Purina puppy chow and dogs under a year should eat 3x a day with a dollop of moist on top of food for flavor, dogs over a year, Purina Dog Chow. To alternate a food or change it is to have diarrhea for sure. When you adopt from us the dog has an ID tag and collar and Microchip tag (probably) and these should be left on the dog for identification. Think about your wants for a dog which should live out its life with you. Is it too big so it might be dangerous to your kids without meaning to be? Will you then give it up to be put down or hope for a person to take it off your hands? Too small the dog cannot escape the loving fingers of a baby or young child meaning no harm but able to cause pleanty of damage to where the dog would bite out of being desparate. Is the breed too hairy? Does it want to play with the cat or eat it? Talk to your representive. We are a nonprofit 591 3 C charity and all donations are tax deductible and we appreciate them very much. Also young people and old can volunteer here. give us a call 915-598-0411 or our website for donations of money on Pay Pal. www.pgawaep.org.
