SANDY - Fostered in Southern Maine's Story

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Sandy and her siblings were saved from a high-kill shelter in Calfornia and arrived at Give a Dog a Home Rescue in Sebec, Maine on Wednesday 3rd August. We post our available dogs in states across the East Coast and Canada to reach as many people as possible in hopes of finding perfect homes and families. We do not transport dogs — families must come to the rescue in Sebec, Maine to meet and, hopefully, take home their new best friend.

Sandy is a Belgian Mal / German Shepherd Mix and it is important to understand that she is a high energy, intelligent girl so be sure you have the lifestyle that she needs to give her and you the best life possible together... note she is also a love bug and all round sweet, gentle girl - not the maligator people assume when they hear the name Belgian Mal.

Health & Background
âœ... This is what her foster family has said about her:

Terra (aka Sandy) has been fostering with us for two months. She is such a loving soul and one of the sweetest pups you'll ever meet. Terra loves running and playing and taking walks with our dog, Apollo. Apollo was slow to accept her, but now that he has such a fun time playing with her in the yard, he has seemed to become much more tolerant of another dog in his house.

Terra is crate trained. She sleeps well through the night without complaint, and plays with her chew toys if she wakes up before we do. During the day she'll spend 30-45 minutes crated off and on. She does so without being noisy now, except she does still protest if we have her crated when we are eating dinner. She does better if our dog is crated at dinner time with her, so it seems to be at least partially a competition/jealousy issue.

She's got her basic commands down--come, stay, sit, lay down, and her release command 'break.' She walks nicely on a leash, although we do have some issues with pulling when she's walked along with another dog. She's calmer when she's walked on her own as she still gets more playful energy when she's with a canine friend. We had some peeing occur in the house the first 2-3 weeks, but she has done great with potty training and it's been more than a month since the last incident.

Terra loves her toys and isn't choosy...she'll go from playing with a stuffy to nomming on a rope toy to chasing around a ball. While she has her bursts of playful energy, she has overall been calming down and having long periods where she chills out and and rests peacefully.

It's been a pleasant evolution as now she is far more content to spend stretches of time laying next to me resting or chewing on a toy while I read or am at my desk.

Terra has been waiting long months since arriving at Give a Dog a Home Rescue rescue in September to find a forever home with a family that will give her the love she deserves. If you can be that family, please apply to adopt

What SandyNeeds

‍âTM€ï ̧ An active family that can meet her physical and mental exercise needs
Mental stimulation and enrichment — structure, toys, puzzles, and engaging activities
ï ̧ High-quality food and treats to keep her healthy and energized
Regular veterinary wellness checks for preventive care and long-term health
❤ï ̧ Time to adjust and feel safe — patience to decompress and build trust

Adoption Details
Adoption Fee: $550
Location: Southern Maine
Families must complete and submit an adoption questionnaire. Give a Dog a Home Rescue's Adoption Policy
If you would like to start the adoption our process is below: Please note the rescue is run by a volunteer and is very busy. Do NOT constantly email or phone, if you need to email or call, please send just one communication and wait for someone to respond. Submit Application with two personal references and a vet reference. If you have never had pets and do not have a vet, we will need THREE personal references. Ensure references are people who know you and your lifestyle well. Applicant MUST inform vet and references that someone from GaDaH will be calling. As long as we are able to contact your vet and references, it takes just 1-3 days to process and hopefully approve applications. If you rent we will need an approval letter for the breed of dog you are wanting to adopt from your landlord on official letterhead paper or email. Rescue processes and hopefully approves applications. Once approved, rescue invites applicant to come to the rescue to meet your chosen dog/s, spend time with him/her and then hopefully take him/her home. We do NOT hold dogs so if you are unable to come within a week or so of submitting your application the dog will still be available for adoption to other families. For Canadian adopters, all that is needed to get them across the border into Canada is a current rabies certificate and proof of adoption, which is the adoption contract. Both of which are included in the medical file you will get when you adopt. (https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/pet-travel/by-country/pettravel-canada) Ensure ALL Fields are filled in, if something is relevant, then put n/a or something in so it recognizes an entry. We do not recommend using a phone or ipad since these applications for some reason don't tend to come through and you will have spent a lot of time on the application for nothing as it will need to be re-done. Once we have you approved we can schedule an appointment for you to come to meet him/her at the rescue in Sebec, Mane and then hopefully take them home to start your new life. I just have to work on an appointment basis as I run a boarding/day care business and the rescue and so am really busy, but by planning ahead of time I can be pretty flexible.
