SAMMIE-MAINE's Story

*PETFINDER INQUIRIES WILL NOT BE ANSWERED. PLEASE COMPLETE OUR ADOPTION APPLICATION AFTER READING HIS FULL ADOPTION LISTING. THE ADOPTION APPLICATION IS LOCATED ON OUR WEBSITE: http://www.idogrescue.com/adoption_application

*PLEASE CLICK "Show more" below to continue reading about Sammie. Please read all the way to the end as we include a lot of detail about Sammie.

Say hello to your new bestie, Sammie! He's a 6-year-old male, 67 lb. Goldendoodle who is in an IDOG foster home near Kennebunk, Maine.

FAST FACTS ABOUT SAMMIE:

*AGE: 6 years (born September 2019; will be 7 in September)

*WEIGHT: 67 lbs.

*FENCE REQUIREMENT: A physical fence is recommended as he loves to run freely and chase his ball. We will consider a home without a fence depending upon the plan for him to get exercise/potty. No electronic or invisible fences will be allowed as we do not think these would set him up for success.

*COAT TYPE: Minimal shedding coat; he was just groomed but you can see the photo of his longer hair. He will need regular brushing and grooming to prevent matting; the good news is that he LOVES to be brushed!! Grooming costs are around $120/grooming session and he needs to be groomed every 8 weeks or so depending upon how long his coat is kept. Sammie does GREAT at the groomers too!

*ENERGY LEVEL: Pretty chill!! Sammie loves to go for longer walks or hikes and loves playing on the beach. In the backyard he will play chase with the ball if he feels you're worthy! If he's in the mood its his favorite game!! He loves at least 1 long walk a day but would be thrilled with more!

*DOGS: Yes! He would be fine as an only dog or with another mature dog. People are the most important to him rather than dogs. He spent the first 6 yrs of his life as an only dog and would be happy with that situation again! However, he also does very well with other dogs on walks and has adapted quickly to having other dogs around in his foster home. He should do well in a home with another mature dog or as the king of the castle!

*CATS: His foster family did not have cats but his original family said he did well around their friends and neighbors cats.

*KIDS: Yes! Older kids would be best. Sammie lived with a 1 yr old and a 12 yr old in his prior home and did great. However he is quite strong and sometimes forgets his manners when he's happy to see someone, especially men. His quickly responds to a behavior reminder but older, dog-savvy kids would be ideal for this sweet boy based on his size.

*CAR: Sammie jumps in the car, ready to go, once he knows you! And he's a good traveler!

*CRATE: Sammie has not been crate trained but is very respectful in the house and does well when left at home alone. He's had freedom in his foster home since day one with no problems at all. He loves to be near you and will sleep in your room and near your bed but doesn't need to be on it. He prefers to sleep on the floor or on his own bed.

*HOUSE TRAINED: YES! Sammie is fully house trained! If he needs to go out hell come and tell you!

*LEASH: Sammie walks well on a leash with a harness. He's very used to the harness and stands still when you put it on. He loves to sniff and lift his leg during walks so he doesn't necessarily go too fast but he can get excited and pull sometimes to get to that next important smell. Adapting him to a Gentle Leader would be helpful. He's very smart and learns quickly. If walked with another dog he does best on a double leash which keeps them both at the same distance otherwise he seems to want to win the race!!

*AT THE VET: Great! He's calm and easy to work with. Everyone loves him!

*VETTING: Samson is neutered, microchipped, current on core vaccines, dewormer, and heartworm/flea tick preventives. He is heartworm and fecal negative.

*WITH GROOMING: Sammie just went to the groomers and got a glowing report. He is easy to work with and has no issues when the groomer works with him.

MORE ABOUT SAMMIE BOY!

Sammie is a super sweet boy! He was surrendered to IDOG by his owner, a single mother of 4 who couldn't give him the time and attention that he deserved. He was obviously well loved in his former home. She said he is a truly great dog who just wasn't getting the time and love he deserved so she put Sammie first and reached out to IDOG for help finding him a family that can give him more.

Sammie is a gentle boy who is learning that he LOVES all the extra attention he's now getting in his foster home. After initially wondering what all the fuss was about, he now eagerly gets in line anytime there's attention to be had! He adores going on long walks in the woods or around town. He's not really interested when another dog walks by. He's too busy checking out all the messages left by other dogs on sign posts or trees!

He's never been crate trained but is very respectful in the house. His foster family leaves him out at night or when they leave for a couple of hours sometimes during the day. He's always done well! He's taken out regularly but if he needs to go out hell come up to you and whine to let you know. He does take his Butler role very seriously and will announce anyone who comes to visit so those in close quarters homes would need to consider this.

He is so sweet and laid back. As time goes on he is getting more and more affectionate with his foster family so whoever is lucky enough to make him a part of their family is in for a very loyal and sweet friend! He loves to cuddle and will quietly stand next to you until you realize he is there and needs more attention. He is a Velcro dog and follows his foster family everywhere. He loves people and is especially fond of men! Anyone who visits the house is welcome as long as you greet them but male visitors may get a hug whether they want one or not!

Doodle lovers know that zoomies and high energy can be common for this breed. But Sammie is a bit more of a refined boy with good manners. He still likes to play and loves to go for walks but he's much more concerned with being near and loving his people!

IDEAL TYPE OF HOME:
Sammie would adore a home where his family has time to spend with him. He's already done the home alone situation but now realizes that he prefers more attention and loving!! He would do great as an only dog but should also do well with another well-behaved dog. 'Given his strength, a home with older, dog-savvy kids would be best. Sammie would never want to accidentally knock a little one down when he greets them at the door!

Adjectives that describe Sammie, besides wonderful:
-Velcro
-Chill
-Loving
-Gentle
-Playful
-Respectful
-Snuggly
-Smart
-Affectionate

Activities that Sammie enjoys:
*fetch, sometimes known as chase and keep!
*walking
*hiking
*carrying around his loves
*cuddling
*meeting new people
*sitting outside with his people

A few needs work items for Sammie:
-jumping up to say hi to men
-adapting to a Gentle Leader harness for walking
-although he has good manners he wont necessarily turn a blind eye if you a have a steak on the counter and leave the room. He may feel you've invited him to dinner!

After adoption we ask that you give any rescue dog time to acclimate - the 3/3/3 rule 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months. For 3 days after adoption/transition, the dog may wonder who you are, what the routine is, who the other dogs are. After about 3 weeks, the dog has typically acclimated to your schedule & knows its role in the house. After about 3 months, the dog has revealed their temperament & personality & settled in.

ADOPTION PROCESS DETAILS:
*Please read ALL the information in Sammie's listing before applying to ensure you understand what he needs to be successful in his new home.
*Please complete our adoption application at http://www.idogrescue.com/adoption_application (copy/paste URL into your browser).

*If you completed an adoption application in the last 6 months & would like for your application to be considered for Sammie please email us at rescue@idogdoodlerescue.org.

*You must complete our adoption application fully. If you choose not to answer all the questions in the application, your application will not be considered. We will review your application & email you if you made our short list of applicants for him. Please respond within 24 hours if you receive an email from us about making our short list.

*You can check the status of his adoption at https://www.idogrescue.com/adopt or any of our social media pages. We will change his status to adopted when he is adopted.

*We base our adoption decisions on what is in the best interest of our dogs. Please note our adoption policies are in place for the safety & welfare of our dogs. We are all volunteers & have jobs, families, pets of our own to care for. We do the best that we can to get back to you in a timely manner. We believe in taking time to go through our thorough process to try to match the dog with the best fit for that dog.

*You must be approved to adopt him before we will schedule a meet & greet. We do not transport our dogs.

ADOPTION FEE: $495

ADOPTION FEE EXPLANATION:
Puppies & highly adoptable dogs have a higher adoption fee to help IDOG cover the vetting & expenses of the other dogs in IDOG whose adoption fees do not cover their expenses. Our expenses are high these days due to increased vetting expenses, board & train costs, medical/health issues & surgery that is needed for some of our dogs. IDOG relies heavily on donations to bridge the gap between our adoption fees & our expenses. Unfortunately, donations are down across the board for all rescues.

TO APPLY FOR Sammie-Maine PLEASE COMPLETE THE APPLICATION ON OUR WEBSITE: http://www.idogrescue.com/adoption_application
