Sally 's Story

Meet Sally, our 2 year old Akita!

Sally has been adopted and returned to us because… well… she’s an Akita. And we say that with complete honesty and respect for the breed. Sally is a great dog — she’s just not a dog for everyone. She is regal, strong, loyal, protective, intelligent, and unapologetically bull-headed. Akitas are known for their independence and deep, selective bonds, and Sally fits that description perfectly. She is not overly social, she does not spread her love freely, and she expects mutual respect from her people. This isn’t something that needs “worked through” — it’s who she is.

Sally bonds strongly with her person and expects to be the center of her world. She requires both mental and physical stimulation and does best with structure, consistency, and an owner who understands the Akita mindset. She is confident, curious, and very intelligent, which means she will test boundaries if given the chance. She walks nicely on leash once her initial excitement passes and has not shown any signs of aggression or defensive behavior with staff during handling or care. She is, however, known to be protective around strangers — another hallmark Akita trait that requires an experienced, confident handler. She has been gentle taking treats from hands, allows full body handling without issue, and knows basic commands like sit and waiting for her food bowl. Recently, she’s been working on sit, paw, and lay down — though she sometimes prefers to offer both paws or “sit pretty” just to keep things interesting.

Sally is playful and energetic, though she’s still figuring out toys and how to fully engage in play. She’s smart enough to consider jumping fences (Akita owners will understand exactly what that means), which tells us she’ll need secure containment and an owner who stays one step ahead. She can be excitable, independent, and selective about listening — not because she can’t learn, but because she chooses when it’s worth her time. Again… very Akita.

Sally’s ideal home:
🐾Akita-experienced owner only
🐾No other dogs
🐾No kids
🐾Cats are unknown, but based on her strong Akita temperament, we would not recommend a home with other animals

Sally is not mean, not broken, and not misunderstood. She is simply a true Akita — a breed that is powerful, loyal, demanding, and deeply rewarding when placed in the right hands. Akitas are not for everyone, and honestly, they’re rarely for anyone without experience. If you have been longing for a purebred Akita, understand exactly what you’re getting yourself into, and are prepared to meet her needs without trying to change who she is, Sally may be your perfect match. We strongly encourage anyone interested to do their research before coming to meet her, as we will not be placing Sally with just anyone. She deserves a home that is prepared for her high-maintenance needs and ready to appreciate her for exactly who she is.

If anyone knows of any rescues who may be interested in Sally, please tag them below.

If you'd like to adopt Sally, you can fill out an adoption application at www.mcwvanimalshelter.com or at the shelter during business hours.
