Sabino (MR26-326)'s Story

Meet Sabino!

Sabino is a 4-year-old, 26-pound Husky mix who is very shy and still learning that the world can be safe and predictable. She is just beginning to build confidence with leash walking and harness work and will need time, patience, and gentle encouragement as she continues to learn.

This sweet girl is currently undergoing heartworm treatment and will require ongoing care, including return trips to the NMDR clinic. Her adopter must be committed to following her treatment plan, and a heartworm waiver is required upon adoption.

Sabino enjoys toys as a source of comfort and enrichment and is vocal in expressing herself. She has had her left eye surgically removed due to having a 'micro eye', which does not slow her down or limit her ability to explore her environment. She appears to tolerate other dogs and may benefit from a calm, well-socialized canine companion. Due to her sensitivity, she will do best in a calm, structured home where she can move at her own pace.

Sabino is sensitive to leash pressure and may become overwhelmed, at times attempting to pull away or mouth at the leash. She needs a patient, experienced adopter committed to slow desensitization work, calm handling, and safety awareness as she continues to build trust. She requires a secure, fenced-in yard and elevated safety awareness and structured management due to high flight risk and sensitivity to handling. An adult-only home is strongly recommended.

A meet-and-greet at the shelter is required to ensure the best match.

With time and patience, Sabino has shown she can continue building confidence and trust at her own pace.
------
Many NMDR dogs have had limited prior socialization and may need time, patience, and support as they adjust to home life. Skills such as house training, leash walking, and handling may require continued practice. Progress will vary by individual dog. Homes with older children are often a good fit, depending on temperament. To learn more about NMDR and our adoption process, please visit our website.

National Mill Dog Rescue's Adoption Policy
At NMDR, we use a welcoming, conversation-based adoption process! We look at every applicant as a partner, offering honest education about our dogs' needs so you can make the best choice for your lifestyle. We generally do not deny adoptions based solely on yard size, housing type, adopter age, or having other pets. Because many of our dogs are rescued from commercial breeding facilities, we maintain a few firm safety and mission-aligned policies: Spay/Neuter Requirement: To help end the cycle of irresponsible breeding, all resident dogs in your home must be spayed or neutered. Homes with Children: Many of our dogs had limited socialization before rescue. Older kids are often a great match! Homes with younger children are considered individually based on the dog’s needs and the adopter’s experience with home management. Companions Only: Our dogs are adopted strictly as indoor family companions. Out-of-State Adopters: You are welcome to apply, but you must travel directly to the specific shelter housing the dog (in CO or MO) to complete the adoption. We do not ship or transport dogs. A Supportive Safety Net: Life is unpredictable, and sometimes a match isn't perfect. We discuss long-term safety nets with all adopters, and if a placement doesn't work out, we welcome our dogs back with zero judgment. Fees: Adoption fees vary by age and directly offset the extensive veterinary care, dental work, and rehabilitation each dog receives before adoption. Ready to meet your new best friend?
