SaSa - ADOPTED's Story

SaSa is two years and four months old, a Border Collie, Golden Retriever, Husky and Formosan Mountain Dog Mix from the country of Taiwan. She weighs 45 pounds (as of 6-14-2025) and is fully grown. SaSa arrived in the USA on 11/19/2024 and is staying with our foster family in North Wilmington Delaware.

SaSa’s rescued story:

SaSa was rescued at 4 months old from a 3rd floor balcony of an apartment last summer. She was left on the balcony alone without any shelter while her owner took the entire family and their Maltese for a-week-long vacation. SaSa was hot, thirsty and hungry after finishing a little food and water left by the owner, she started crying day and night that attracted the attention of a dog rescuer who lived on the 5th floor of the next apartment building.

After some efforts, the rescuer got the cell phone number of SaSa's owner. She called and told the owner about SaSa's condition. He said that SaSa was his cousin’s dog, he did not want her and gave her to him, but their Maltese disliked SaSa because of her energy, so they could not take SaSa on vacation. Their vacation had four days left, and they would not end the vacation early for SaSa.

The rescuer told him that the temperature had been nearly 100 degree in the past few days, SaSa had no water, no food, and no place to hide from the sun, and she would soon die of starvation or heat exhaustion. But the owner responded coldly that he did not care and the rescuer can take SaSa away if she wants her. Since the rescuer got the owner’s verbal consent, she went to get the key from the apartment manager and then went to rescue SaSa immediately.

The rescuer later learned that the owner had lied to her. SaSa was not his cousin’s dog at all, but was adopted by him from the shelter a month or two before she was rescued.

The rescuer also had learned from a neighbor that SaSa had been living on the balcony since being adopted, and she was never allowed into the house. The neighbor shared a video with the rescuer that on an oven-like afternoon, SaSa was trying to crawl into the house while the entire family was inside.

SaSa’s completed medical information:

Fortunately, SaSa was a healthy puppy when she was rescued, except that she was underweight and a little dehydrated. She has passed the following medical tests before coming to the USA: distemper, SNAP 4Dx, CBC, Biochemistry blood work, Giardia, and a PCR test for diseases and infections transmitted by fleas or ticks.

SaSa has received x-rays on hips and joints, and has examined by one of the best orthopedic surgeons in Taiwan to confirm that she does not have hip dysplasia or floating kneecaps.

SaSa is micro-chipped, spayed, de-wormed, up to date on all vaccinations. She is heartworm negative and has been on monthly prevention. All SaSa's medical documents including the x-rays films on her hips will be given to her adopter when she is adopted.

SaSa’s temperaments and personality:

In appearance, SaSa inherited the golden coat and tail of the Golden Retriever as well as the erect ears and light brown eyes of the Husky. SaSa has also inherited the energy of a young Golden Retriever; she is not hyperactive, but she needs some exercise every day to burn out her energy, generally daily short walks are not enough for her.

Three weeks ago SaSa was returned after being adopted for three weeks. The adoptive mom said that SaSa is a great dog that is loving, affectionate, always likes to cuddle, and gets along with their 9-year-old dog, but she pulled hard on the leash and has too much energy comparing with their current dog; they have been used to the low energy of their dog. Because SaSa still needs leash training, her dog trainer told her that she would not be able to take their dog and SaSa out for walks at the same time in a short term, which disappointed her.

Sho also said that her husband is a cat person, when she encountered difficulties in helping SaSa adapt to the new environment, he did not offer her any support or help SaSa's transition, and this was another reason she had to return SaSa.

She also thinks that SaSa may not gets along with cats. She said although SaSa was tested with cats in the pet store in Taiwan and in the video she seems to have no interest in cats, her cat has been hiding since she adopted SaSa. When her cat occasionally came out and wanted to get close to her, SaSa tried to chase the cat.

Regarding the part of SaSa pulling on the leash, our dog trainer has suggested adoptive mom several times to use the gentle leader to train SaSa, but her dog trainer insisted that the gentle leader would not work for SaSa, so SaSa never had the gentle leader training before being returned.

We later found out that her dog trainer was probably wrong. SaSa’s first day after being returned to our foster home, the foster mom used the gentle leader to take SaSa for a walk for the first time, SaSa surprisingly walked very well.

Because SaSa is very smart and energetic, our dog trainer suggested that she needs a confident owner who also has experience with the working breeds before. SaSa needs to continue the gentle leader training, once she no longer pulls on a leash, she will no longer need the gentle leader.

SaSa has the temperament of a Golden Retriever; she is very playful, outgoing, and likes to shake hands with people. She is also very passionate and excited when meeting strangers or being in a new environment, which will make her hyperactive during the first 2-3 hours.

SaSa’s energy will be good for moderately-highly active owners who like outdoors activities. She will not be the right dog for small children because she is very fast and walks carelessly, she would knock the small kids down easily; the children over 10 years old would be better for her.

Although SaSa gets along with dogs of different sizes and ages, she is not be the right playmate for small dogs or old dogs because she plays roughly..

Like many Goldens, SaSa also loves water and showed she is a natural swimmer when she first swam in Taiwan. She is very intelligent, athletic, and is a fast learner that learns tricks or new things quickly. We think that she will benefit from complex agility training to provide her with the physical exercise she needs and keep her mentally healthy.

The most important thing in SaSa’s life is playing with toys; she LOVES all kinds of toys and spends a lot of time playing with them. She likes to carry a toy and walk around; wherever SaSa lies, there must be toys scattered around her. She will move the toys upstairs and downstairs to different places. Every time SaSa enters the room, the first thing she does is to look for toys. SaSa needs many chewable and safe toys to let her pass the boring time.

Like a Husky, SaSa is good at jumping; she can easily jump over 61cm high dog gate. She needs a physically fully enclosed yard with a fence more than five feet high. Any chicken wire fence, wood fence with mesh wire or chain-link fence is not safe for SaSa because she knows how to step on the hole of the mesh wire to climb over the fence.

SaSa is not food or toys aggression or possession towards people or dogs. She is housebroken; she likes to use the bathroom on the grass. She is not frightened by thunder, lightning or fireworks, and does not have separation anxiety either.

SaSa loves car rides and is well-behaved in the car. However, she is alert to strangers walking outside or approaching the car when she is in the car; she would bark, but she would stop if you tell her to stop. Once SaSa is taken out of the car and introduced to the person, she will act passionate as she usually does.

Where do you meet SaSa?

If you are seriously thinking of giving SaSa a loving permanent home, please email us for the application form. Because SaSa is living with our foster family, we do not accept stop-by visits. Before meeting SaSa, you needs to complete the application and be approved.

More videos of SaSa are as below:

1. Before being rescued.
