Ruthie's Story

Ruthie is a beautiful 1-year-old petite Great Pyrenees with a heart full of love and a story that shows just how strong she truly is. Before coming into rescue, Ruthie endured heartbreaking neglect and was tied to a fence with metal wire as punishment for chasing chickens. The wire wrapped around her rear leg, causing a severe injury that was left untreated for days, possibly weeks. By the time she was rescued, her leg couldn't be saved and had to be amputated.

Despite everything she's been through, Ruthie is nothing short of a sweetheart. She's shy at first but adores gentle affection; being pet is her absolute favorite. She gets along wonderfully with other dogs and seems to genuinely enjoy the company of both people and pups. She's a quiet, mellow girl who's just starting to discover the joys of toys (soft squeaky ones and crinkly textures are her current favorites), and she loves to chew on antlers. Ruthie sleeps peacefully in her crate at night and has been easygoing and calm in her foster home. Overall, Ruthie is a gentle, lazy cuddlebug with so much love to give. She's looking for a patient, loving home that will continue to show her the kindness she's always deserved.

Although Ruthie's primary wounds have physically healed, she does appear to have some neurological defects from her prior life. When she is outside, Ruthie's mobility is generally okay but she struggles at times to ambulate indoors, preferring to stick to her "safe spots" even when there is ample carpeting around the house. It is as though her brain and her legs are not connected. For this reason, she will need an adopter who is patient and willing to work through her quirks.

Ruthie is still overcoming her fear of loud noises, but she's making amazing progress. She no longer trembles at the vacuum or tries to flee when cars pass by, which is a huge step forward for this brave girl. She feels most comfortable when someone is outside with her during potty breaks, whether it's a person or another dog. Ideally, Ruthie would go to a home in a more rural setting because even the suburbs are overwhelming to her, although we know this may not be feasible. Because Ruthie can dart when she is scared (yes even on three legs), she must go to a home with a secure, physical fence (NO EXCEPTIONS).

Finally, Ruthie was diagnosed with Ehrlichia, a tick-bourne disease, upon intake into the rescue. She has been treated with a course of Doxycycline and we do not anticipate any long-term effects from the illness.

Adoption fee is $375.00 and includes spay/neuter, microchip, fecal/deworming, vaccines and prevention up to date. Ohio residents only.
