Rusty's Story

Hi, my name is Rusty! I'm a RED pawprint, which means I need an experienced home that meets some specific criteria. Here is what would work best for me in my new home:

-Personality: Active, energetic, attentive, smart, rowdy
-Can Live with Kids: Rusty would prefer to live with adults, or potentially older, sturdy, dog-savvy kids/teenagers (recommending 14+.)
-Can Live with Cats: Unknown history, will need slow, supervised introduction.
-Can Live with Dogs: No thanks! Rusty is reactive to most dogs and did not do well living with another dog in his previous home.
-Can do Apartment Living: No, Rusty is an active, energetic young dog who needs more space. He was also surrendered to the shelter due to excessive barking in his previous home.
-Potty Trained: Yes
-Bite History: No
-Positive Reward Based Obedience Classes Required: Not required but would certainly be beneficial!
-Energy Level: High
-Needs Medical Procedure Before Going Home: Our vet recommends surgery on eye lid provided by WHS before going home.
-Additional Information: Rusty is a whirlwind of energy who would really benefit from an adopter who can help him harness it into positive outlets. Smart, attentive, food-motivated-- he's highly trainable and very eager to learn, just needs someone willing to put in the work! Rusty was described as skittish by his previous owner, which is also something we've observed during his time in shelter-- he does have a bit of "stranger danger" upon first meeting (keeps his distance and will likely 'spooky bark' a couple of times) but in our experience it's fairly easy to win him over (he's a big sucker for treats!) Rusty would prefer a low-traffic home with a steady, predictable routine rather than a bustling party house with lots of people coming and going all the time. He really enjoys working on food puzzles/scent games (which also helps to keep him occupied and out of trouble!) While he may be a diamond in the "ruff" at this point in time, he has so, SO much potential to be a wonderful lifelong adventure buddy for the right person.

If you are interested in adopting, please fill out an application on our website (www.whatcomhumane.org/adopt) or in person at our facility. We recommend calling into the shelter after your application has been submitted so our front desk can give you next steps on our adoption process.
