Rufus's Story

Hi, my name is Rufus! I'm a RED pawprint, which means I will fit well into a home that meets some specific criteria. Here is what would work best for me in my new home:

-Personality: Goofy, affectionate, just a teeny bit shy at first but a total party boy once he knows you!
-Can Live with Kids: Unknown history. Rufus is a big, excitable pup who's still working on manners and could easily knock down super young kiddos on accident, so he might do best with sturdy, older, dog-savvy kids/teens experienced with large breed dogs. Recommending ages 12+ at this time.
-Can Live with Cats: Unknown history, will need slow, supervised introduction.
-Can Live with Dogs: Yes - Rufus would likely do well with a dog of similar size/energy. All introductions done at WHS to ensure everyone gets along.
-Can do Apartment Living: Not recommended due to size/energy level/activity needs, as well as history of being primarily an outdoor dog.
-Potty Trained: Appears to be!
-Bite History: No
-Positive Reward Based Obedience Classes Required: Not required but would certainly be beneficial!
-Energy Level: Medium
-Needs Medical Procedure Before Going Home: Neuter/microchip

Meet Rufus! This smushy-faced guy has come a long way from the nervous, shutdown dog he was when he first arrived at WHS after being caught in a trap. It only took a day or two of tasty snacks and TLC for him to become fast friends with our animal care team, and since then he's shown us a little more of his personality each day. Rufus "the doofus" is a goofy, affectionate pup with tons of potential. He already knows sit, shake, and (usually) takes treats very gently! We have very limited information on this guy's history, but from what we understand he was part of a larger group of dogs that had been seen roaming around a gravel pit for quite some time. He seems like he had a home at some point based on his sociability and knowledge of basic cues, but unfortunately no one ever came looking for him so now he's ready to find a new forever family to call his own. If this rolly-polly pup sounds like the perfect fit for you, submit an application to come in and meet him!

If you are interested in adopting, please fill out an application on our website (www.whatcomhumane.org/adopt) or in person at our facility. We recommend calling into the shelter after your application has been submitted so our front desk can give you next steps on our adoption process.
