Ruby Roo's Story

Ruby Roo is a one-of-a-kind sweetheart looking for a very special home — one with patience, time, and a big soft spot for a lap dog who will pay you back in endless love, kisses, and snuggles.

Ruby was born with congenital Megaesophagus and a diverticulum (a pouch in her esophagus). We took her to Iowa State Hixson-Lead Small Animal Hospital last week for a scope, and unfortunately there is nothing surgical to correct her type of Megaesophagus.

What does that mean? She can’t eat like most dogs, but she doesn’t let it slow her down one bit! With the help of her Bailey chair (which comes with her), Ruby enjoys her special meatball meals (4x daily) and hangs out upright for about 30 minutes after eating. She’s on a routine of meds (sildenafil and omeprazole), upright eating, raised bowl for drinking, and on Hills Digestive Care ID diet rolled into meatballs. Please keep in mind these feedings do take extra time.

She may have extra needs, but Ruby doesn’t know she’s “different.” At not quite a year old, she’s energetic, joyful, and full of zest for life. She is enthusiastic about every adventure, including visiting the vet. She has become our “event” dog. She loves other dogs, adores kids, and would thrive in a home that welcomes her happy wiggles and playful spirit. Ruby does jump up on people and we are working with her on this. Cats? We’re not so sure — she might be a bit much for them.

Ruby is completely house-trained. She is a
Very, VERY good girl in her kennel. She completed a 6 week obedience course at Fur Better Fur Worse and would LOVE to go to more classes. Ruby loves toys and Nyla bones and is not destructive with anything that isn’t hers like shoes, blankets or furniture. She may defluff a stuffy occasionally…and is not the least bit remorseful!

Ruby is currently searching for a foster home with the potential to adopt, someone willing to learn her routine and love her through it. In return, you’ll gain a loyal, goofy, and affectionate best friend who just happens to need her meals served in a special chair.

Ruby is proof that different is beautiful. Could you be the one to give her the chance at the happy life she deserves? We will provide support throughout the process.

www.k9kindnessrescue.org/foster
