Roux's Story
Everyone meet Roux!

Temperament with:
Dogs: Roux does best when he doesn’t have to share his home with other dogs, so an only-dog household would be a perfect fit for him.

Cats: Because he does have some prey drive, a cat-free home may be the safest fit, though he has shared environments with cats and redirects well when interested in furry or feathered critters.

Children list specific ages: He has interacted with kids as young as 7. He hasn't been around toddlers. He has done great with tweens and older!

Strangers: He’s always really excited to meet new people!

Training Needs:
Crate Trained: Yes - although sometimes it can take him 15 minutes or so to settle especially in a new place. Putting a t-shirt with your scent in the crate helps! He definitely prefers to share your bed or have a bed of his own though. He is the best little furry foot warmer!

Potty Trained: Yes

Roux is a smiley boy with an infectious, larger-than-life personality that’s bound to bring joy to everyone he meets! This HANDSOME shepherd mix weighs in at around 65 pounds and is 2 years old, but he’s truly just a big puppy at heart! His playful, goofy energy perfectly matches his size, and his happy spirit is impossible to resist!

Roux has loved everyone he’s met! He gets excited and sometimes forgets that his paws should stay on the floor, but he settles down quickly. He is very food motivated too and will do just about any trick for a little snack! He is always happy to hang out in the kitchen with you while you’re cooking and patiently waits a few feet away while taking in all the smells. And despite his love affair with food, he has never once been guilty of helping himself to food on the counter— he’s a gentleman after all!

Roux is a FAST learner! He learned his name, the “paw” command, and the “down” command all in one day! He also knows the “wait” command when being fed and when going outside, though sometimes he may get excited and need a reminder. He’s also been working on the “leave it” command and is getting pretty good at it!

His absolute FAVORITE thing to do is play fetch! He would play fetch all day if you let him! He even brings the ball back to you and will *mostly* drop it at your feet when you tell him to drop it. What can I say, the guy loves his ball! I recommend having him go potty before bringing out the ball, because once that ball is in sight, he is in play mode for a while.

He walks great on a leash and harness and loves to go for walks. He zig zags a little bit, but the man takes his pee-mail very seriously! He absolutely loves being outside and is always ready to take a stroll. While he loves getting his energy out through playing ball and running around in the yard, he also loves to just hang out if you are having a low energy day.

Roux would thrive as the only dog in his home, where he can soak up all the attention and affection to himself. While he loves to run, sniff, and play ball or tug-o-war, he is also super snuggly and sweet especially when he’s sleepy. He often lays his head on his foster’s lap or feet and likes to give kisses everywhere! He happily takes belly rubs and will let you know he wants more by booping you with his paw.

Roux isn’t really a dog-park or doggy-daycare kind of guy, and that’s okay! He’s much happier getting his exercise and enrichment with his people through walks, playing fetch, sniffing around the yard, and other one-on-one adventures. He has plenty of fun without needing a pack of dog friends!

This sweet boy is also 100% potty trained. He would absolutely love a fenced yard but has also done exceptionally well on a 100 foot lead hooked up to his harness in an unfenced yard. He certainly doesn’t let it hinder his fun! He rides well in the car, he may just ask for some reassurance for those long rides. And he always wears his seatbelt especially when the windows are all the way down so he doesn’t go have a meet and greet with everyone he passes.

Roux also loves his chew toys! He thoroughly enjoys stuffed toys as well, but he tends to make it snow inside with toy stuffing if left unsupervised, so larger dog-safe rubber or nylon toys are best suited for this cutie.

Overall, Roux is a very sweet, playful boy with a goofy personality. Sometimes he barks at things he doesn’t understand like automated blinds, strange looking frogs, or the evil vacuum, but is easily redirected and just wants your love afterward!

Roux may be bouncy and full of energy at times, but once he settles, he’s one of the most affectionate, loving dogs you’ll ever meet! He’s the perfect balance of playful and calm — always happy to run around and have fun, but just as content to relax and snuggle when it’s time to wind down! He is an incredible boy with so much love to give.

Looking for a foster or adopter!

Apply here to foster; rubywhiskers.org/foster

Apply here to adopt: rubywhiskers.org/adopt
