Rosie In A Foster Home's Story

Meet Rosie.

Rosie is estimated to be 7 years old, about 60 pounds, and has been waiting for her chance since August. She came into JPAWS, the parish animal shelter, as a stray with no known history. No one ever came looking for her. What we do know is who Rosie is now, and who she has been quietly showing us all along.

Rosie is a dog who wants a human bond more than anything else.

She loves attention and will ask for it. She leans into you, gives hugs, and offers kisses freely. At adoption events, she showed her true self. Calm, gentle, polite, content to chew on a toy until a person walked by, then immediately dropping everything just to interact. People mattered more to her than anything else.

After months in the shelter, we decided to give Rosie a chance here at the Jefferson SPCA inside Jefferson Feed to give her a break and to be seen by a different audience on the Eastbank. Being here has shown us something important. In a smaller kennel and with limited daily exercise, Rosie can look like a lot at first glance. She gets excited. She wants out. She wants connection. She wants to be with people.

And when she gets that, when she has a chance to stretch her legs, settle, and focus on a person, Rosie shows exactly who she is.

She walks well on a leash, appears to be house trained, and is deeply people oriented. She seems scared of cats when we walked her by cats, but with time and guidance, she may learn to be okay with them. Rosie is not aggressive. She is simply a dog who has been waiting too long and wants her turn to belong to someone.

Rosie is heartworm positive, and that has been the biggest barrier standing between her and a home. Her heartworm treatment is fully covered by Jefferson SPCA. What she truly needs is a foster, adopter, or even another rescue with the space and ability to support a larger dog through treatment. About two months of rest, structure, and love would change everything for her.

Rosie has done everything asked of her. She has waited patiently in a shelter kennel since August. She has shown up to several adoption events and tried her best but no one has taken a chance on her yet. Now we are asking for someone to look past the kennel energy and see the dog underneath it.

Rosie is currently in a foster home while she is undergoing heartworm treatment. If you would like to meet her, we can contact her foster mom to schedule a meeting at a mutually convenient time. Please contact our volunteer dog adoption coordinator, Martha, at cajunlassie78@att.net for more information.

If you can foster, adopt, or help her find placement with another rescue, you would be giving Rosie more than a break from the shelter. You would be giving her the human bond she has been waiting for all this time.

She is ready. She just needs someone to see her.

Adoption fee includes vaccines, spay/neuter surgery, microchip and a heartworm test. Any dog that tests positive for heartworms can be treated through our Fix-A-Heart Program. Adopter has to buy a year supply of heartworm prevention before treatment begins.

Please note: this application is view-only in Dropbox and must be downloaded to your device to be completed.
