Romeo's Story

Meet Romeo

Do Not Adopt This Dog (stick with us—it’s a joke )

1) First reason —> Tiny Thief!

Quietly extracts handkerchiefs out of your pockets while you sit. Every time his foster reached into his pocket it was empty. Started to question his sanity. Week's worth of handkerchiefs gone missing. Watching the Olympics he reached into his pants pocket only to spot a tiny paw already sneaking out a handkerchief. Thief immediately scampering off with it. Spotted stuffing his stolen goods under the living room couch. Other stolen objects under the couch - foster’s socks & underpants & 7 handkerchiefs. Underpants Stealing Gnomes of South Park have nothing on this little “cat” burglar

'oh Romeo Romeo Wherefore art thou Romeo’

Shakespeare’s inspiration for this famous phrase: his own small dog stealing his unmentionables!

Okay - I made that up lol…but this Bonus tidbit is true - the only dog to actually appear in a Shakespeare play was Crab - a small lap dog who appears in "Two Gentlemen from Verona".

2) Second reason —> A Bamboozler!

When this 12.5 lb & 12 months young Chihuahua/Terrier mix made his way to Illinois from Tennessee he bamboozled his foster into thinking his teeth were too small to chew puppy kibble. Conning his foster into making him broiled chicken breast with cheese mixed into his kibble. He would then carefully pick out the chicken & cheese - still ignoring the hard kibble. The Head of Safe Haven, suggested problem wasn’t that his teeth couldn’t handle hard kibble, but that his foster was being played. She suggested mixing wet dog food with the kibble soaking up the gravy. Tiny bamboozler gobbled it up.

If you are easily bamboozled - do not adopt.

3) Third reason —> Wants to be next to you - always!

Treasure your alone time? Forget about it. Wants to be with you - always. Want bathroom privacy? Forget about it - he needs to know what you’re doing in there without him. Pets are required so you better like the softest most luxurious coat of any chihuahua ever. He needs to love & be loved!

If you don’t like love —> Do Not Adopt This Dog!

4) Fourth reason —> Do you have dogs? Do you hate it when they get along?

Romeo gets along with…EVERYBODY! He is also a little instigator that gets everybody going and insists on Micro Sized Zoomies. Loves to chase and be chased. Also enjoys fetching tennis balls and will bring them back and drop them at your feet. The returns however aren’t always linear point A to B - if you know what I mean…lol

He has been living with a huge 110lb super Alpha Male GSH/B&T Coonhound, a 65lb female Australian Shepherd speed queen, and a 35 lb Benji lookalike. He readily engages in all play including chasing and rough housing. He has an adorable tiny tough guy growl - when he wants everybody to take him seriously. It is hard to take him seriously - It’s laugh out loud funny!

If you don’t like laughing out loud- Do Not Adopt this Dog!

5) Fifth reason —> in the face of danger his 3 foster dog pals charge toward danger. Romeo takes his inspiration from Monty Python and the Holy Grail (a very funny movie from 1975 - worth watching). When King Arthur & His Knights encounter The Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog guarding the Holy Grail - they throw their swords and hands in the air - running around while shouting —> “Run Away! Run Away!”

Romeo when faced with "dangerous rabbits" will charge pass you to the high ground. You will hear tiny barks as he flys by you - “Run Away! Run Away!” Do not count on Romeo for your defense plan - especially if you can’t run fast - he’s pretty speedy for a little guy. He will not have your back. He actually will be —>behind your back. You’re gonna be left on your own out there in the face of dangerous rabbits! Be prepared!

Do not adopt this dog for home or personal defense.

6) Sixth reason —> You will lose your heart!

Romeo will steal & be the keeper of your heart!

In many ways he reminds me of a tiny Golden Retriever. From the golden color & softness of his coat to his demeanor he is very much a pocket Golden. He loves to be held, carried and travels very well in the car. He is a very happy, very amusing and very funny character. It’s hard to turn him down when he requests a treat or to go outside.

PS A tip - if you lose your heart —>look under the couch -somewhere amongst all your soiled handkerchiefs & dirty underpants...you will find it!
PPS Your best defense should you encounter an angry rabbit: In the words of the great Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail:

“Run Away! Run Away!”

Our standard adoption fee is $465. We offer a $15 discount for adopters who pay by cash or check, making the adoption fee $450.

The adoption fee includes spay/neuter when age appropriate at one of our participating veterinarians, age-appropriate core vaccinations, fecal test, deworming, current on flea and tick preventative, and microchip.

To ensure the best match for both our dogs and adopters, we require a fully completed adoption application, a phone interview, and a meet-and-greet with the entire household. Applications will not be reviewed unless fully completed.

Submitting an application does not guarantee adoption and does not obligate you to adopt; it simply allows us to begin the review process.

To request an application or for additional details, please email adopt@safehavendogsIL.org

Please note that the breeds and sizes posted in this biography are educated best guesses and are not guaranteed.

Safe Haven Dog Rescue reserves the right to approve or decline any adoption application based on the best interest of the dog.
