Rocky Road's Story
Meet Rocky Road — the perfect blend of sweet and spirited! This distinguished 44-pound pup greets everyone with happy tail wags and bright, hopeful eyes, usually in anticipation of a tasty treat. A true food enthusiast, he already knows commands such as sit, down, and paw, and he’s always willing to show off his skills. Rocky Road loves attention, enjoys playing fetch, and was described by his previous family as a well-mannered, housetrained companion who was gentle and kind with children. Despite his handsome gray muzzle, he is a youthful 6-year-old with plenty of energy, recently tackling a four-mile Sunday field trip with ease. On his outing, he proved easy to harness, settled quickly into a comfortable walking pace, and showed that while he notices every squirrel, goose, and small dog, he stays manageable and can be redirected with treats. He was polite greeting new friends at a café, affectionate with his human companions, and navigated a "gauntlet" of distractions with impressive composure, only barking once—and only because the other dog barked first!
Rocky Road came to the shelter with Reagan, a dog he previously lived with. While they are not a bonded pair, they get along wonderfully, and if an adopter chooses to take both home, only one adoption fee will be charged—a fantastic BOGO deal for two great dogs! Rocky Road is looking for a home without cats or free-roaming small animals, and because he can be selective about his canine friends, we encourage potential adopters with dogs to bring them for a meet-and-greet to ensure a good match. Loving, loyal, and full of charm, Rocky Road is ready to find a family who will enjoy his enthusiasm, embrace his love of treats, and appreciate the joyful companion he is. Come meet him—your new best friend might be waiting!

This pet is eligible for an Adoption Audition! What is an Adoption Audition? It’s a 5-day, no-strings-attached, trial adoption period. You can take this pet home to try it out! Interested? Come to the shelter any time during open hours and talk to one of our Customer Care staff!

Be sure to check the "shelter information" box on the listing to see if the pet is located at our Michael R. Frey Campus (4500 West Ox Road, Fairfax) or our Lorton Campus (8875 Lorton Road, Lorton). Then, come in during our open hours!
