Rocky's Story
From Rocky’s foster family, Mike and Kristen:

Meet Rocky, our foster dog in Playa del Rey, Los Angeles, looking for his forever home. He’s about two and a half years old, weighs about 42 pounds, and is neutered and house-trained.

Rocky is smart, curious, and quick to learn. He already knows sit, lie down, leave it, and look at me. He takes treats gently, and we haven’t seen food guarding. He’s bonded closely with us and loves being part of whatever we’re doing—even if we’re just loading the dishwasher.

He’s at his cutest in the mornings and evenings, rolling onto his back for belly rubs. Sometimes his tail wags so hard it hits him in the face. He throws his bear around, gets the zoomies around 5:30, and stops on walks to scratch against bushes. With us, he’s affectionate and happy to settle nearby.

We’re working with a trainer and seeing him become more comfortable. After a month in our home, we’re seeing almost none of the separation anxiety he had when he arrived.

His best home

We’re looking for an active, experienced dog person who is excited about training. Rocky needs daily exercise, enrichment, and patient, consistent training for the long term. An adult-only home where he’s the only pet would give him space to settle in. His compatibility with other dogs, cats, and children hasn’t been established,

His history and training needs

Rocky entered an LA shelter after a reported bite in his previous home, described as a single puncture; we don’t know the circumstances. There were no reports of aggression from shelter staff or volunteers. We worked with Friends of Anubis Rescue to get him off the euthanasia list.

We’ve learned that Rocky is wary of new people and needs slow introductions. In our foster home, we mistakenly introduced a visitor indoors, which resulted in a minor ankle bite. He needs to be introduced to new people outside on a walk with space and time to build trust.

Today, most walks with us are easy: Rocky walks on a loose leash and checks in often. We’re seeing far fewer reactions to other dogs than when he first arrived. He wears a muzzle as an added safety measure because, when overwhelmed, he can become difficult to control and nip his handler. These moments have been infrequent with careful management. His adopter should understand and be comfortable with this history, recognize when he’s overwhelmed, and give him space. We hope that with time the muzzle can be phased out, but for now, we've found it a useful tool to understand where his threshold is safely.

Meeting Rocky and ongoing support

There’s a team behind him. We’d start with one outdoor meet-and-greet and discuss a one-week home trial, subject to rescue approval. We’re happy to share his training routine, talk through his needs, and recommend his local trainer. For a nearby adopter in Playa del Rey, we can also help with occasional walks or out-of-town care, depending on our availability and by arrangement.

His flea, tick, and heartworm prevention is current. He received shelter vaccinations in August, and his leptospirosis booster is planned for this week.

We love him and would keep him ourselves if we didn’t already have another dog who needs lots of attention. Think he might be your dog? Email Friends of Anubis Rescue at friendsofanubis@gmail.com with a little about your home, routine, and dog experience. We’d love to tell you more about everyday life with him.

More of Rocky’s everyday life: https://www.instagram.com/p/DeKxkaTkp07/
