River (NOT YET AVAILABLE)'s Story

Please read the pet description IN IT'S ENTIRETY before applying. Thank you for your cooperation.
NOT YET TAKING APPLICATIONS – NOT YET AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION

NEW INTAKE 1/15/2026: River - female - approx 3 years old - 10.4 pounds - Boston Terrier mix

Reason for intake: This little girl wandered up to the back porch of a home in a very rural area in Bossier. She was emaciated, cold and had milk as if she was nursing puppies somewhere. The property and barn were searched but no puppies were found. The momma dog never left the back porch. We could only assume that either she was dumped after and the people kept the puppies or her puppies died somewhere. We think maybe she was trying to find food which is why she ended up at the home. The caretaker of the elderly person who lived in the home, reached out to us. We went to the property and yes, it was in the middle of nowhere... just pastures and cows. She was very skittish and didn't understand why we were putting her in a kennel, but she settled down. We didn't have room at the time so we reached out to our partners at Bossier City Animal Control and they were able to take her in. We knew at some point she would get out after stray hold. The following week, I (Ninna) went to BCAC to take pictures of the dogs for the Buddies of Bossier City Animal Control Facebook page... and there she was. She was laying down in her kennel but stood up when I approached. I think maybe she remembered me. I knelt down gave her kisses... and some treats I had in my pocket... took my pictures and left. I couldn't get her out of my mind, though... so I texted the superintendent and asked if I could pull her because we did have a couple of adoptions and she said "yes". Since coming to the rescue... whenever I go to her kennel... she gives me kisses. She was someone's dog... she was loved at one time... what happened? It's all in her past now. She's heading to our vet the week of January 19, 2026, for spaying and everything else she needs. In the meantime, she's getting lots of love and lots of good groceries! (Left picture is when she showed up at the home... right picture is with us.)

NOT TAKING APPLICATIONS: Many dogs, particularly breeder, hoarder or senior dogs, can have multiple medical issues that need addressed. Additionally, sometimes we take in young puppies requiring multiple vaccinations and/or quarantining. In this particular case, we are not yet taking applications either due to age or possible illness or some other reason. We will post when s(he) is ready for adoption. In the interest of fairness, EARLY application submissions will NOT be considered. Please note... we cannot respond to messages/emails, etc., on dogs that are NOT yet available for adoption. Please wait until the dog is available for adoption. We will post him or her on Facebook in our Adoptable Dog Album pinned to the top of our page which you can follow at this link: https://www.facebook.com/share/1B46skRWF5/ OR you can keep checking our website at www.roadtorescuela.org. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” ~ Gandhi

Be responsible ~ Always spay/neuter, keep your dogs on heartworm prevention, vaccinate against disease... and if you bring a pet into your life, commit to that pet for life.
