Meet Riga

If you are at least 21 years old and everyone in your household is on board with adopting a puppy, CALL 651-645-4370 between 7:00 am and 9:30 pm and we will return your call within 24 hours. If you elect to contact us via e-mail it may take several weeks for us to get back to you. Renters must provide proof that you are allowed to have a puppy. Please be prepared to provide a vet reference prior to adoption.

Riga came to PUP with his two siblings from a rescue in Texas. We are making a guess at breed but we could be off. We think he might be a Red Tick Coon Hound, dachshund or a Beagle X.. Whatever his genetics, he a sweet and cute. He was surrendered by a man who had too many dogs. Actually 9 adult un-spayed female dogs, so you can guess what happened next. The puppies were in a Texas foster home for about a month and arrived to a Minnesota winter that seemed to be a bit of a shock to his little system, but he quickly learned that snow could be fun. He is in a foster home with his brother, Tablisi, and a Doodle, and two children, so he is having lots of opportunities to socialize. He is about 12 weeks old and weighs about 12#. We expect him to be about 35# as an adult. He is athletic, loves to chew on bones, is eager to play and is more the follower in the playgroup. He runs hard and plays hard. He is just fine sleeping in his crate after his activities. We think he will do best in a home with another playful dog or a home where his people are willing to take him to the off-leash park or on other adventures. He has a solid energy level, silky smooth coat so he would make a fun hiking partner as an adult. He does have webbed feet, so maybe swimming might be up his alley. He is a charming little dog who will steal your heart.

The early months are when puppy learns the social skills needed to be a skilled dog in dealing with other dogs and a good citizen in the human world. Adopters should be committed to getting puppy into lots of new and different human social situations, hearing vacuums, trucks, and rattling garbage cans, meeting people who are clapping, laughing, with hats, tools, bikes and skate boards. AND puppy needs many opportunities to meet and greet dogs of all shapes, sizes and dispositions. Just sharing a home with another dog is not as much doggie socializing as puppy needs. If good canine social skills are not learned and maintained during these early months, it will be very difficult to ever master them. Puppy play dates, trips to the pet store, puppy socialization classes and later, obedience classes are particularly important. All of this must be planned in the age of COVID so please think through your socialization plan before making the call. If all this doggie time and involvement seems like a good idea, you are up for a puppy! As always, a tired dog is a good dog.

Riga has been vet checked, wormed and had two routine vaccinations. He will need one more routine vaccination plus rabies at the owner’s expense. The $350 adoption fee includes the cost of his required neuter provided it is done by one of the PUP vets. The terms of the contract include that the neuter must be done by 6 months.
