Ricky Bobby's Story

Ricky Bobby – “If You Ain’t First, You’re Last”
Quick Facts

Age: 5 years
Gender: Male
Breed: Hound
Vaccinations: Up to date
Neutered: Yes
Heartworm: Negative
House Trained: TBD
Crate Trained: TBD
Leash Trained: TBD

Named after the main character of Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, this 5-year-old hound needs you to know right out of the gate: if you “ain’t first” to apply for him… well, “you’re last.” Ricky Bobby took his freedom ride from the shelter on January 30 and is now decompressing in foster care while being assessed by our canine behaviorist partners at CNY Canine Academy.

Ricky Bobby has many classic hound traits, including a lot to say about his day and a willingness to share the daily report whenever given the opportunity. He will happily sing the song of his people and let you know when something exciting is happening. When it’s time to move, Ricky Bobby fully embraces the “I wanna go fast” lifestyle — he loves to run, play, and burn off energy.

Once he settles in, Ricky Bobby also shows a softer side. He enjoys affection, connection, and snuggle time, especially when he feels safe and secure. He was extremely stressed while in the shelter environment, so we are still getting to know his full personality now that he has had the chance to decompress. What we are seeing so far is a playful, expressive dog who thrives with routine, patience, and consistency.

Ricky Bobby is heartworm negative and will be tested for Lyme as part of his ongoing veterinary care — because, as the saying goes, “Don’t you put that evil on me.” His assessments are ongoing, and his profile will be updated as we continue to learn more, because we believe in letting dogs show us who they really are once they feel safe.

If You’re Thinking About Adopting Me, I Think You Should Know

I am a hound with a big voice, big feelings, and a big heart. I benefit from structure, clear communication, and a home that understands decompression and adjustment time. I enjoy activity, play, and affection, and I do best with people who are patient and willing to meet me where I am.

I would prefer to live with older, respectful children who understand boundaries and won’t “come at me like a spider monkey.” With time, positive reinforcement, and consistency, I have the potential to be an incredible companion — ready to “shake and bake” into my best life.

Important Adoption Information and Next Steps:

All animals adopted through the Oswego County SPCA (OCAWL) are:
Spayed or neutered
Up to date on age-appropriate vaccinations
Microchipped prior to adoption
Cats are FeLV/FIV tested, and dogs are heartworm tested (if age-appropriate).
Our animals are cared for in loving foster homes — they are not housed in a shelter environment.
We review all applications thoroughly to ensure the best match for both animal and adopter.
Our adoption fees help cover the cost of veterinary care, food, and rescue operations so we can continue saving animals throughout Oswego County.

To apply to adopt, please visit https://www.oswegocountyspca.org/adoption-application.html and complete our adoption application.

After Submitting Your Application:
Please make sure you have notified your veterinarian that we will be calling and that it is okay to speak with us. If you do not currently have a vet, please determine which one you will be using and set up care in advance so we can confirm your new pet will receive medical attention when needed.

For Pets Already in the Home:
Because the number of homeless animals in our area is so large, we adopt only to homes where current pets are spayed or neutered, with documented medical exceptions. We also require that all resident pets be up to date on their vaccinations to help ensure that everyone — both new and existing family members — stays healthy and safe.

Keep in Mind:
We are 100 percent foster-based and 100 percent volunteer-operated, from the top down. Our team works hard to get animals into their forever homes as quickly as possible. Please be patient with us — but if you do not hear back within a few days, feel free to message us on our Facebook page to confirm your application went through.
