Rica (in foster)'s Story

Rica learned scent work this year and took to it right away. She is seven years old and still picking up new things, and she is very pleased with herself about it.

She came to us as an owner surrender, so we know something about the life she had before. She is house trained, crate trained, spayed, and up to date on her vaccinations. She lived with children in her old home and did well with them. Everything that makes a young dog hard work is already behind her, and she knows how to live in a house.

She is smart and she wants to please, which is a combination that makes her easy to teach and easy to live with. What she wants most is her people. Rica is happiest lying at your feet while you do whatever you are doing, and she will take all the attention you have got. She bonds hard and she is well mannered about it. For anyone who wants a dog for company rather than a project, she is already most of the way there.

A few honest things before you apply. Earlier this year Rica had a severe eye irritation that did enough damage that the eye had to be removed. She adjusted quickly and it does not slow her down at all. She does need drops in her remaining eye every day for the rest of her life to keep it healthy. She is very cooperative about being medicated, so it is a short job, but it is a daily one and it is permanent.

Rica needs to be the only pet in the home. She has been assessed with other dogs and she does not want to live with one, and she cannot go to a home with cats. She also needs a securely fenced yard.

Rica has years of good company left in her and she would like to spend them with one family.

We ask that an application be approved before a meet and greet is scheduled. Petersburg Animal Care & Control's Adoption Policy
Thank you for your interest in adopting from Petersburg Animal Care & Control! We’re so glad you’re considering giving a shelter pet a loving home. We do not charge an adoption fee; however, all animals must be spayed or neutered prior to adoption, and the cost of the procedure is covered by the adopter. We’re happy to support adopters by coordinating appointments with our low-cost veterinary partners for spay/neuter services and other basic care needs. Adoption Process • We prefer to schedule appointments for meet-and-greets to ensure that staff or volunteers are available to spend adequate time helping you get to know the animal. • When you arrive, please sign in and wait to be escorted by a staff member or volunteer before entering the kennel areas. • For safety reasons, please do not reach into kennels or attempt to touch animals through barriers. If you’re interested in a particular pet, our team will bring them to a meet-and-greet area for proper introductions. • After your visit, you’re welcome to submit an adoption application. Applications must be approved before we can schedule a meet-and-greet with your family pets. • Meet-and-greets with personal pets are by appointment only, and for safety, two staff members must be present to handle all animals involved. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to make each match the best fit possible — both for our animals and their future families.
